Our coverage will begin tonight at 10PM ET and continue through tonight’s main event pitting UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson against Anthony Pettis in a rematch of their WEC classic. UFC 164 Play-by-Play:
Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier
Rd. 1- No glove touch in this one. Poirier looking to establish leg kicks early. Body kick by Koch and Poirier connects with a nasty punch. Poirier drops Koch and swarms to finish but Koch recovers and sinks in a deep triangle. Poirier nearly gets mounted with it but works out and he is clearly tired after ending back up in Koch’s guard. Koch nearly catches him in a triangle choke again but Poirier backs out. Poirier seizes control in the clinch and lands come big shots. Massive punch by Poirier and Koch crashes in a heap to the canvas. Poirier is swarming to finish but somehow Koch has survived. Koch works up but then gets taken into side control. Crazy first round. Poirier sinks his signature D’arce choke and appeared close to a finish but has to give it up after Koch works out as the horn blows. What a round. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Poirier.
Rd. 2- Poirier is stalking his prey early here. Koch is starting to establish his jab now. Nice straight left by Poirier and he lands again to the body. Hip toss by Poirier off a quick clinch and Poirier has Koch’s back along the cage. Poirier moves for a neck crank and misses it but he ends up in full mount. Poirier briefly has an arm-triangle but he gives it up to strike instead. Koch finally works back up to his feet but Poirier is controlling in the clinch. Koch finally works off the cage but he is oddly circling into Poirier’s power hand and that could be an issue later. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Poirier (20-18)
Rd. 3- Third starts with Poirier again on the offensive and he is looking for a takedown on the cage now. Koch is landing some knees and then ends up with a takedown here. Duke Roufus is imploring his guy to go for it. Nice elbows by Koch here in Poirier’s guard. Koch takes Poirier’s back as the bottom man tries to escape and Koch goes for the choke but misses it. Poirier is trying to shake Koch off and nearly catches the head but Koch arches out. Koch locks up a body triangle and Koch locks up the choke multiple times but Poirier keeps his chin tucked as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has the round 10-9 Koch, but the fight for Poirier (29-28).

Ben Rothwell vs. Brandon Vera
Rd. 1- Herb Dean is our referee and we are a go after a touch of gloves. Legkick by Vera is answered by a hard strike from Rothwell. Inside leg kick to a nice 1-2 by Vera but a big strike from Rothwell knocks Vera back. Wicked body kick by Vera. Another quick leg kick by Vera. Rothwell swarms and eats an inside leg kick on the exit. Nasty left by Vera but Rothwell eats it and moves forward. Body kick by Vera but he takes a hard left as he escapes. Legkick by Rothwell now. Body to leg kick combo by Vera. Rothwell fires a headkick that draws a reaction from the crowd but it doesn’t land. Huge cup check by Rothwell as the :10 clapper sounds and Vera is hurting bad. Rothwell apologizes profusely and they touch gloves in the brief restart as the round sounds. MMAFrenzy scores it 10-9 Vera.
Rd. 2- Legkicks by Vera to open the round but Rothwell backs him up with a hard series of punches that just miss landing flush. Rothwell backs Vera up along the cage and lands some nice shots before landing the clinch. Knees by Vera here and Rothwell responds with a few of his own before Vera escapes. Nasty uppercut by Rothwell but he eats a vicious elbow by Vera. Vera lands a step knee to and over-the-top elbow in a brief clinch. Rothwell’s body is starting to wear the evidence of Vera’s kicks now. Vera tries a snatch single but misses it as he never really commits. Body shot to a clinch by Rothwell and he lets go to land a nice combo. Body kick by Rothwell. Vera with a body combo and a headkick that is blocked. Rothwell is again stalking forward but eats a combo from Vera before firing a head kick as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Vera but this is a close fight.
Rd. 3- Rothwell is swarming forward and lands a hard shot before clinching. Knees by Rothwell now. Action stalls and Dean separates the two fighters. Rothwell is getting goofy with his footwork and eats a counter but then Rothwell connects with a light combo and a big uppercut! Rothwell is swarming now and lands a series of uppercuts before Vera drops to the canvas after a knee. Dean watches closely as Rothwell looks to finish and that’s it.

Clay Guida vs. Chad Mendes
Rd. 1- Yves Lavigne is the referee for this one. Guida bounces forward and Mendes looks to measure up Guida. Mendes with a hard leg kick and Guida just misses a a big counter. Mendes lands a hard right but Guida lands one of his own to stop his advance. Nice exchange here and Guida shoots in but gets caught by a power guillotine but he manages to to scramble out. Head kick by Guida. Mendes dodges a series of hooks by Guida. Mendes has opened a cut under Guida’s right eye now. Jab by Mendes and Guida whiffs on a combo. Mendes shoots in on a shot and Guida tries a lateral but Mendes’ hips were low and he lands in Guida’s guard. Guida is controlling posture well but Mendes is landing occasional shots. Guida scrambles up and gets out of the front headlock as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Mendes.
Rd. 2- Guida tries a teep kick but misses. Accidental headbutt by both fighters but they’re fine. Hard legkick by Mendes. Guida tries a flying knee and the foot on the follow through lands on Mendes’ cup. Brief break now. Touch of gloves on the restart. Nice sprawl on the shot by Mendes and he takes Guida’s back. Guida works up and Mendes lands a nicely timed knee. Mendes with a shot of his own but he does not commit to it. Guida tries a shot but it is stuffed by Mendes and he lands a nasty uppercut. Guida with another shot that Mendes blocks and spins to the back. Mendes works back out to the front head position and lands some knees before Guida escapes. Guida is still stalking forward. Mendes fakes a shot and Guida sprawls and Mendes spins again to the back and lands some strikes before Guida escapes. Guida tries a jumping teep but eats a left by Mendes. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Mendes. (20-18)
Rd. 3- Mendes wastes no time to start the third round as he drops Guida with a nasty counter right hand. Mendes corners Guida and he lands a vicious hook followed by a nasty upper cut that catches Guida as he drops. Follow-up strikes and that is it.

Josh Barnett vs. Frank Mir
Rd. 1- Rob Hines is our referee tonight. No touch of gloves and these men are going at it, wow. Both are landing big strikes but Mir seems to have the advantage early. Uppercuts from Barnett in the clinch now. Nasty clinch shots from Barnett here and he lands a big elbow over-the-top. More knees and punches by Barnett. Wicked knee by Barnett drops Mir awkwardly and referee Rob Hines jumps in a little too early and Mir is livid.

UFC Lightweight Title Fight: Benson Henderson (c) vs. Anthony Pettis
Rd. 1- No touch of gloves tonight and Herb Dean is our referee. Bendo warms early and looks for the takedown against the cage. “Lets Go Pettis” chant has started now. Pettis separated briefly but Bendo immediately pressures forward and connects in the clinch. Pettis again separates briefly but eats a hard legkick and is clinched again. Bendo is looking for the takedown but also landing front kicks to the calf. Winding heel kicks in the clinch now by Bendo. Pettis breaks free and lands a hard body kick. Hard knee by Pettis and he lands four hard body kicks in a row and then gets taken down when he gets too flashy. Pettis attacks with an arm bar with both arms caught and it is a surreal moment as Bendo is forced to tap. What a crazy moment and the crowd explodes in cheers.
