Although recent comments from Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen (as well as an apparent incident involving urinating and a Wand van) seem to indicate that a bout between the rivals could be booked soon, “The American Gangster” says he doesn’t have an opponent lined up.
Following his submission win over “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26, Sonnen tossed another call out Silva’s way, and the former PRIDE champ countered with his own video response. According to a follow up report from MMA Junkie, however, Sonnen reportedly wouldn’t answer any questions about “Wand” this Saturday at a card in Portland. All Sonnen would confirm is that he doesn’t have an opponent, and added:
“I’ll need some fights to happen in the middleweight division (and) fights in the light-heavyweight division,” Sonnen said at a Full Contact Fighting Federation event this past Saturday. “But as it stands right now, there’s no opponent.”
“But I don’t have any opponent. I’d really like to be part of the 20th anniversary show. I’m really looking to be part of the St-Pierre (vs.) Hendricks card.”
Sonnen also relayed that he’s heard Rua will finally fight Antonio Rogerio “Minotouro” Nogueira again, after their UFC 161 bout was cancelled due to the latter being injured. No specific details were disclosed.
So, as it stands right now, don’t start planning your Sonnen-“Wand” viewing party just yet. Silva has been saying he wants the fight to happen publicly, but Dana White claims the fighter won’t book it unless he gets a share of PPV sales. Based off what Sonnen said this weekend, it looks like not much has changed.
