Gastelum: “Whole Different” Fighter Will Face Melancon

Kelvin Gastelum

Kelvin Gastelum will look to build on his breakout 2013 campaign Wednesday at UFC Fight Night 27, when the TUF winner takes on Brian Melancon. Not only will it mark the first time Gastelum has fought since he defeated Uriah Hall to win TUF 17, but the former middleweight will be competing at welterweight.

In a recent appearance on MMA Radio, here is some of what Gastelum had to say about cutting the weight, which he apparently did with the help of the renowned Dolce Diet.

“I feel fantastic – my weight’s dropped, and I feel faster and stronger,” Gastelum said. “You’re going to see a whole different Kelvin Gastelum than you’re used to. The hardest part was getting used to the meals. i’m used to eating whatever I want, and this is the first time I’ve had to follow a strict diet. I sneaked in a couple treats for myself every now and then, but overall I stuck to it pretty good. My weight’s on track right now, and I’m going to be ready to go on Wednesday.

“After the fight, I’m going to stick to it. I don’t want to get too heavy and have to cut all this weight again. I’m going to stay lean and mean in case (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva calls and says to get ready in a couple weeks. That could very well happen, and I want to stay ready.”

Considering Gastelum’s frame and the fact he’s 5’9 tall, one would think the move to welterweight will benefit his game. It’s going to be interesting to see how he does against Melancon, who if you saw his KO win over Seth Baczynski, you already know is pretty dangerous.

UFC Fight Night 27 will be hosted by the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1.
