Additional UFC 97 Fights Announced
MMAFrenzy.com learned this morning that more bouts have been announced for UFC 97: Redemption, which is to take place on April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The event is to feature headlining bouts between Thales Leites and Middle Weight Champion Anderson Silva, as well as Former Light Heavy Weight Champion Chuck Liddell facing off against 2005 PRIDE middleweight grand prix winner Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
The added bouts include the return of one-time middleweight contender, and Montreal native, David “The Crow” Loiseau to face off against former TUF contender and Team Quest product Ed “Short Fuse” Herman. “The Crow” is on a three fight winning streak and hasn’t been stopped in almost five years. Herman was a highly touted prospect during his stint on The Ultimate Fighter, but has shown to be inconsistent in his UFC career, and suffered losses in each of his last two bouts.
Also added to the card, former World Extreme Cagefighting Light Heavyweight Champion Brian Stann will make his UFC debut against TUF 9 participant, and Team Quest product, Canadian Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 97. Former Marine Stann was expected to make his promotional debut against Steve Cantwell in December, but had to withdraw due to injury. Soszynski was dispatched from “The Ultimate Fighter” by Vinny Magalhaes, but went on to defeat Shane Primm via Kimura at the season’s finale event. Considering both fighters’ strengths and history one would expect this bout to take place mostly on the feet, and likely end in fireworks.
Other bouts booked for UFC 97: Redemption include a middleweight match-up pitting Nate “The Rock” Quarry against Canadian Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald and a lightweight tilt between Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts Mark Bocek and David Bielkheden.

Good to see Loiseau will be back in action.
let me guess…the crow by triangle…haha
Glad to see Loiseau back in the UFC, i hope he brings it. It looks like more WEC fighters are starting to brought in also, i am a big fan of WEC, every evnt has at least a few really exciting fights that rival the excitement level of the UFC.
j-Mac will be hard pressed to win this fight unless he gets it to the ground, Quarry is a far superior striker
Brian Stann was always expected to come over, Condit and Larson are coming over because it appears WEC’s WW division will be abolished.
Think this is a do or die fight for Herman, 1 more loss and he could be out. MacDonald’s history has been win/lose/win/lose etc, so if history repeats itself, he’ll win this one. Stann vs Soszynski will be an excellent fight. Hope Stann has been working on his ground game more. If the Pride Shogun shows up, Liddell is done. And Leites, feel sorry for you, Silva TKO 1st round.
Should be a fun card.
Hey Kris- unrelated question I read on SI.com that Varner may have suffered a career ender (detached retina) against Cerrone. Have you heard anything about this?
That story is from the 30th, I think it was mentioned in some of the comments here. They don’t seem to have posted a follow up, and neither has their source.
As Justin said that’s all I’ve read regarding his injuries, but I did read that they’re working on booking an immediate rematch, probably in Arizona, so that makes it seem that it wasn’t as serious as originally thought.
thanks guys! been a little behind on my mma news with midterms closing in! Lil surprised it’d be that quick if he had breaks in his hand and foot!
When are they gonna give Silva some real competition!?
This is all you have to add to the conversation? Really? Talk about a drag at a cocktail party…
Come on. Dig deep. Find something meaningful to say. As for me, I’m sick of Silva. I hope he does retire at the end of this year. I hope he leaves, never looks back, and I don’t have to hear people whine about who he fights. He’s a middleweight, he’ll fight middleweights. If he wants to fight light heavies, he should give up his belt and go light heavy. Until he does, he gets the best middleweights they can line up with him.
Oh wow. Ok, that was supposed to be a kind of party. Also a kind of shrimp. Chilled with a red sauce. Yeah.
AKA c ocktail party.
I agree that people need to stop complaining about the competition! I don’t want to see Silva retire cause I love watching him fight. Someone will eventually knock him off the top, look at Brown vs Faber, many thought he would never lose in that division. It happens to all champs, they can only stay on top for so long. I don’t want to see it, but say Leites catches Silva and knocks him out, was it a real competitor then or pure luck?
When is some real competition going to show up? The MW is thin.
Bring back Vitor at welterweight!!!!
And Vitor at welter helps against Silva how?
If its the same Rua that couldnt deal with friggin Mark Coleman, Chuck’s blue pants could woop him solo. We will see on that one. If both Chuck and Rua show up for the fight, it could be interesting.
Ill take Stann. I hope he doesnt show up with UFC nerves. Kris has lost to a lot of strikers and Stann is waiting in that line.
I have wanted Loiseau for a while, even though he went out of the UFC on a wave of L’s. I just like watching his fights, even when he loses. Im gonna take Ed in this one. This is almost an undercard fight though.
don’t u guys see whats going on? they went chuck and Anderson on the same
card so if they both win they can talk about the match up of the iceman vs
the spider yea I know what people are saying about chuck saying his washed
up but hear me out on this if chuck knocks out Rua and if rua looks like
the shougon of the pride days not the one that keep mark Coleman seeing stars for 3 rounds then and if chuck looks great with some
in proved defense and gets a long awaited knock out then we have your ufc
100 main event or co main event with lesner vs mir because we know
the spiders going to win it’s just if chuck looks like the iceman then
don’t tell me you would not like to see that match up. we all know that
chuck wants a title shot the only way he will get it in 2 or 3 fights like
they say is if one of those wins are a win over Anderson Silva
Lesnar v. Mir 2 is scheduled for may 23 at UFC 98. I suppose it’s possible they are trying to setup Silva v. Liddell, but maybe a bit of a stretch.
I have to go with Loiseau, far superior striking and of course some of the best elbows in the busines. He can not be hesitant though, he is back finally to his old form and Herman will have to take this to the ground quick or he will be hurt quick.
It’s funny what the Franklin beating did to Loiseau, it made him scared and timid and it took this long to get his head back together again.
I hope Rua seriously trains for this fight, he has dissapointed over and over, even though he won his last fight it was still only a fraction of the old fighter. It has to be his conditioning that is lacking.
