MMAFrenzy’s UFC FIght Night 26 preliminary coverage rolls along as the card moves over to FOX Sports 1. In the FS1 feature fight, bantamweight Michael McDonald defeated Brad Pickett with a solid all-round attack that firmly keeps him in title contention. In other action, Irish star Conor McGregor, Steven Siler, and Diego Brandao picked up wins.
McDonald Submits Pickett
Michael McDonald and Brad Pickett wasted no time tonight in tonight FOX Sports 1 featured preliminary bout. McDonald caught Pickett early and nearly put him away in the first 90-seconds but Pickett refused to go away and fought back. Pickett looked to get back into the fight with a strong takedown in the second round and appeared to be in control of the round until McDonald surprised him with a triangle arm-bar attack. Pickett would defend the arm-bar portion of the attack but he was unable to survive the triangle and was forced to tap. McDonald bounces back from his interim UFC bantamweight title loss to champ Renan Barão at UFC on FUEL TV 7, while Pickett drops to 1-2 in his last three.
McGregor Dominates Holloway
The UFC’s hype of Conor McGregor has been substantial to say the least in the build up to tonight’s fight with Max Holloway. The Irish fighter picked up a victory tonight in Boston by showing his complete game at the TD Garden. McGregor went from dominating the striking exchanges to controlling the fight on the canvas after an apparent knee injury in the second round. The much-hyped fighter showed a good blend of instinct and skill on the canvas with solid BJJ. The victory puts him in an interesting position for his next fight.
Siler Stops Brown
Steven Siler ruined the return of former WEC champion Mike Brown tonight in Boston. Siler caught Brown moving in with a glancing uppercut and quickly pounced with heavy ground-and-pound to knockout the former champ. Siler’s impressive victory sees him improve to an already impressive 5-1 in the Octagon and likely puts him in line for a serious bump in competition for his next fight.
Brandao Outlasts Pineda
In the first UFC fight on FOX Sports 1, Diego Brandao defeated Daniel Pineda in a bout that proved “two out of three ain’t bad.” Brandao came out swinging for the fences and looked to have Pineda in trouble early but Pineda rallied and survived the round. Pineda would then seize control of the second round after sweeping into mount and teeing off with strikes that had Brandao in danger of seeing the fight stopped. Despite a fun first two rounds, both fighters were on fumes in a third round where Brandao’s tired wrestling bested Pineda’s tired wrestling. The Ultimate Fighter 14 champion improves to 4-1 in the Octagon, while Pineda drops to 1-3 in his last four.
