Although lots of fans and pundits have been discussing what might come next for Urijah Faber, since he continues to be one of the UFC’s top bantamweights and currently is ranked #2, “The California Kid” has to get through Iuri Alcantara today at UFC Fight Night 26. Alcantara may not be ranked in the top, and is just two fights removed from a loss to featherweight Hacran Dias, but as Faber recently noted, that doesn’t mean he’s not a dangerous opponent. After all, “Marajo” holds victories wins over Ricardo Lamas, Michihiro Omigawa and most recently Iliarde Santos.
As a result, the 33 year-old is apparently pretty confident about defeating the renowned Faber today, who as MMA Fighting.com pointed out, has never lost in a non-title fight. While speaking at this week’s open workouts, Alcantara had this to say about fighting the former WEC champ.
“It’s going to be a tough fight, but I know I will win,” said Alcantara. “It’s going to be an awesome fight. We will give a show to the fans. I’m sure we are both ready to go. He is a great opponent, he likes to stand and is really explosive, and also has a good ground game. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me to show my work.”
“I have to get in there with a good strategy, be ready for everything,” he said. “I’m going for the knockout or a submission like always, but he’s really tough. I know he will be prepared, so I trained for a three-round war.”
It has the potential to be an outstanding fight, and it’s certainly a dangerous match-up for Faber, considering he’s the favorite and has little to gain if he defeats Alcantara.
