Bellator MMA has added another rematch to their upcoming pay-per-view debut as Emmanuel Newton will take on Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal. The two fighters will square off on the November 2 fight card for the interim Bellator light heavyweight title. Bellator MMA officials announced the move earlier today.
The two fighters met earlier this year with Newton pulling off one of the more shocking upsets of 2012 by catching Lawal with a spinning back fist. The fight could look much different a second time around however, as the NCAA Division II National Champion and Division I All-American wrestler has since returned to using his dominant wrestling attack to set up finishes after sticking to mostly standup in after making his Bellator MMA debut.
“The energy in the arena when Newton dropped Mo with that spinning back fist was simply awesome,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “And, to be able to have this rematch take place on our first PPV is something we couldn’t pass up. With Mo and Emanuel winning our previous two Light Heavyweight Tournaments, the timing was perfect for this rematch add another incredible intriguing storyline to this huge night of fights.”
Bellator MMA will make its PPV debut on November 2 with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson taking on Tito Ortiz in the main event. In a rematch of their 2011 “Fight of the Year” nominee, former champion Eddie Alvarez will return to the promotion against champion Michael Chandler in the co-main event. The fight card will air live via PPV from the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. More bouts are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
