After Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was forced to withdraw from his scheduled, UFC 161 tilt with “Shogun” Rua on June 15th, Chael Sonnen stepped up and agreed to fight Rua at UFC FN 26. Not only that, but “The American Gangsta” took the opportunity to take another verbal jab at Nogueira by tweeting “I hear Brazilian chicken is off the menu.” If you thought “Lil Nog” glossed over Sonnen’s comment, you’d be wrong.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Nogueira was asked about the prospect of fighting Sonnen at some point, and the rugged vet responded:
“That fight doesn’t interest me because I want to fight the best, and there are a lot of fighters that are better than him, including Shogun, Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans,” he said. “Chael talks trash, he’s pure marketing. If we keep talking about him, that’s what he wants. He fought three times for the world title and got beat up. He tried to make his name when Anderson was fighting him injured, and we all saw what happened in the second fight.”
It doesn’t sound like he’s much of a fan does it? And what is Nogueira’s take on the upcoming tilt between “Shogun” and Rua? Which will take place August 17th in Boston?
“Sonnen may take him down twice, but he won’t be able to do that for five rounds. He will need to stand at some point of the fight and Shogun will tag him. I believe Shogun will knock him out.”
No surprises in that prediction really. Nogueira also relayed in the story that he’s hoping to fight again before the year is out, and that he’s hoping to fight Rua. The two battled once before at a PRIDE event in 2005, and “Shogun” emerged with the UD win.
“Minotouro” hasn’t fought since UFC 156 in February, when he worked his way to a decision win over Rashad Evans, after stopping Tito Ortiz at UFC 140 in December, 2011.
