UFC featherweight champion José Aldo has had a rough few days since defending his title against “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung. The champ had to be hospitalized yesterday due to kidney stones. Brazilian site UOL first announced news of Aldo’s medical issues.
In a statement to MMAFighting, Dr. Marcio Tannure, the UFC’s doctor in Brazil, said the situation was not serious:
“I learned about this problem with Andre (Pederneiras, Aldo’s coach). He had renal calculus (kidney stones) before. He needs to send me the results of the exams so I can check it. Andre told me it’s not serious, and he probably already expelled the stones.”
Kidney stones are typically a symptom rather than a condition, in that the stones’ composition typically indicates the cause of the formations. While proper diet and fluid intake can aid in preventing and treating the stones, that can be a bit difficult when fighters have to cut a great deal of weight. The extra strain on the body can exacerbate the condition, which makes one wonder if it is time for Aldo to finally head north to lightweight.
