Although Alexander Gustafsson has the biggest fight of his life set for September 21st, when he takes on Jon Jones at UFC 165, he and Alliance MMA teammate Phil Davis realize that there’s a chance the two could get asked to rematch. While a large contingent of people believe Davis didn’t in fact take a step closer to a title shot at UFC 163, and that Lyoto Machida won their fight, the fact remains that “Mr. Wonderful” is in the title shot mix.
So, are Davis and Gustafsson willing to fight again? Or should fans throw the match-up in the ‘won’t happen’ bin, alongside GSP-MacDonald, Velasquez-Cormier and the recent Evans-Belfort addition? While speaking on the post UFC 163, FUEL TV show, Davis said this:
“Yes. We discussed this. We have the attitude that iron sharpens iron. I helped him with his wrestling and he’s helped me with my overall game.”
That’s good news for fans no? The only man to defeat Gustafsson thus far is Davis, who tapped him out with an Anaconda Choke at UFC 112, before he began training at Alliance MMA.
Now, of course, a few things would have to happen before the UFC considers booking Gustafsson-Davis, but it’s a match-up that could materialize down the line. What should come first for Davis? How about a rematch with Machida? Since Glover Teixeira could lock up a title shot if he defeats Ryan Bader?
