Costa Philippou let it be known recently that he desperately wants to fight, and now the Ultimate Fighting Championship has granted his wish, by matching him up with Francis Carmont on September 21st. The bout will be part of UF 165, which will go down at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.
Although Carmont (21-7) is not currently ranked in the top ten, and does not have as big a name as Vitor Belfort or Michael Bisping (who Philippou was targeting), “Limitless” is on the rise at 185. Carmont has won ten straight bouts and has gone 5-0 since signing with the UFC. Although three of his Octagon wins have come via decision, the Tristar fighter has scored wins over Tom Lawlor, Chris Camozzi and most recently Lorenz Larkin.
Philippou (12-2) has worked his into the top ten rankings, and currently sits at number seven, thanks to five straight wins with the promotion. At UFC 155 in December, Philippou stopped Tim Boetsch in the third round, to build on the UD win he scored over the rugged Riki Fukuda at UFC 148.
The New York fighter had been set to fight contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC on FX 8 in May, but Philippou was cut in training and had to drop out of the tilt.
So, considering all of the top ten middleweights except for Belfort are booked for fights (Bisping is expected to fight Munoz), it’s a match-up that makes sense. Philippou has yet to fight in 2013 and wants to take on a tough opponent, while Carmont is looking to break into the division’s upper tier.
UFC 165 will feature light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones taking on Alexander Gustafsson, as well as bantam interim champ Renan Barao versus Eddie Wineland. Pat Healy is also set to fight rising lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov. Card’s looking pretty stacked.
