Fedor Emelianenko

Top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko cemented his status as the sport’s best heavyweight on Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd of 13,228 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, rebounding from a sluggish start to score a first-round knockout of Andrei Arlovski in the main event of Affliction: Day of Reckoning.

Arlovski’s highly-touted boxing gave him the edge early as “The Pitbull” inflited damage with numerous punches and kicks in the opening minutes. However, his early success turned to over-confidence as Arlovski used a push kick to setup a flying knee midway through the frame. With his hands held low, Arlovski’s over-aggressiveness was the only opening Emelianenko needed, connecting with a right to Arlovski’s chin in midair that immediately collapsed the former UFC title-holder to the canvas at the 3:34 mark of the opening round.

“I feel great. I feel really good about it,” said Emelianenko following the win. “I want to thank God for my victory and thank everyone that was behind me. I really didn’t think I would knock him out but it happened. You don’t expect it to happen but it did.”

With the win, Emelianenko retained the WAMMA heavyweight title and improved his career record to 30-1, while Arlovski falls to 15-6 with the loss.

In other featured action, Josh Barnett forced a game Gilbert Yvel to tap out due to strikes in the third to secure a likely future matchup against Fedor, Vitor Belfort scored a chilling 37-second knockout of highly-regarded middleweight Matt Lindland that left “The Law” out cold on the canvas before eventually stumbling to his feet and heading to the hospital, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou continued his recent downfall with a second-round submission loss to Renato Sobral, Paul Buentello battered Kiril Sidelnikov en-route to a third-round doctor’s stoppage, and Dan Lauzon overcame a trio of groin shots to secure a late first-round submission of late replacement Bobby Green.

On the preliminary card, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira overcame a slow start to knockout Vladimir Matyuskenko late in the second round, Jay Hieron needed just 64-seconds to knockout Jason High in a swing following the evening’s main event, L.C. Davis rebounded from a first-round beatdown to top Bao Quach on the scorecards , Albert Rios scored a unanimous decision victory over Antonio Duarte, and Brett Cooper kicked off the evening with a second-round TKO of Patrick Speight.

The event’s official results were:

  • Fedor Emelianenko (c) def. Andrei Arlovski via KO (punch) — Round 1, 3:34
    WAMMA Heavyweight Championship
  • Josh Barnett def. Gilbert Yvel via submission (strikes) — Round 3, 3:05
  • Vitor Belfort def. Matt Lindland via KO (punches) — Round 1, 0:37
  • Renato Sobral def. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou via submission (anaconda choke) — Round 2, 2:36
  • Paul Buentello def. Kiril Sidelnikov via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) — Round 3, 4:18
  • Dan Lauzon def. Bobby Green via submission (rear naked choke) — Round 1, 4:55
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira def. Vladimir Matyushenko via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 4:26
  • Jay Hieron def. Jason High via KO (punches) — Round 1, 1:04
  • L.C. Davis def. Bao Quach via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Albert Rios def. Antonio Duarte via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Brett Cooper def. Patrick Speight via TKO (strikes) — Round 2, 4:10

That knockout was unreal, i couldnt believe it. Lindland got ktfo’ed as well, not too bad for affliction even though i didnt pay to watch it.

    • gibor says:

i think Fedor is too good to be true! He must be using some kind of voodoo :-)

      • jp says:

Man fedor got lucky he caught arlovski that knockout wasnt that amazing fedor was gettin his ass kicked badly clearly arlovski out struck fedor when arlovski hit him with that kick to the gut fedor got scared and swung a wild punch ans its a good thing he did because arlovski was comin from eygpt with a knee to his face someone please give fedor a ufc contract so randy can take him to school

  • T3chn3tnium says:

who should we feed to the last emperor for people to get off his back?

it is now fedor fighting better opponents than the scrubs they feed to anderson.. whats up with that dana?

    • Justin says:

Yeah, Arlovski is better than some of the scrubs Silva has been fed, but not by much. At least Silva fought Hendo, who t the time held the now defunct Pride belt, and had just taken Rampage to a decision.

      • T3chn3tnium says:

we can go on and on about who they have fought in the past. AA proved he does have a glass chin.. but i mean come on cote? lietes?

      • fr702 says:

Yuji Nagata, Naoya Ogawa, Hong Man Choi, Egidijus Valavicius??

      • T3chn3tnium says:

james irvin, chris leben, travis lutter and the other craps he faced in pride and loss to ryo :P much love

      • T3chn3tnium says:

btw, i only saying this because dana white says fedor has faced no names, which is valid. however, like the hypocrite that dana is he throws chum to the sharks in the way he bashes on other people doing… correct?

      • fr702 says:

T3, I’ve done this over and over again, I just don’t think I have the engergy, perhaps tomorrow my friend :-)

      • T3chn3tnium says:

haha i’ll spare you the torture and take a rain check :)

    • D says:

You think two old HWs that UFC scratched is a bigger test than 95% of the worlds top MWs?

Last time i saw Arlovski in UFC he embarresed himself in a prelim and got cut after that. That Affliction called him “The top contender in the world!!” don’t change anything. Not even the fact that he totally controlled 99% of the fight with Fedor changes anything.

      • bzul3 says:

Most websites including Sherdog on ESPN.COM had Fedor and AA ranked higher than any UFC HW. If u dont think AA was a legitimate contender, I dont know what to tell ya.

      • justin says:

Sherdog is just as much of an opinion based ranking system as my ranking system. There is no “authority” on who is ranked where.

  • double.knavery says:

LOL Fedor KO’d Andre on accident LOLOL

  • MC says:

Arlovski was controlling the stand up and actually outstriking fedor.
I trully believe fedor got lucky tonight.
Dumb mistake by the pitbull and bam fedor took advantage and like a great champ and fighter, he capitalized perfectly.
Why did i want arlovski to win? Because i wanted affliction to go under and finally have fedor, vitor, barnett, lindland in the UFC….

    • scotchydow says:

I would love to see Fedor in, and Vitor and Barnett back in the UFC, but….. Barnett has burned his bridges with the UFC long ago, and the UFC already made it clear they do not want Lindland. I think Vitor could go on a tear and wind up there though. Arlovski will be scratching at their door soon as well. To bad about that “glass jaw” though.

      • justin says:

I’m not sure Arlovski would want back in the UFC, before Affliction dies. And even if he does, I don’t know that they’ll take him back. I think all he would do in the UFC is either beat newcomers, lose to the top 5 guys, or get boring decision wins via the Lyoto Machida game plan.

  • thezanman says:

    Fedor is the man!!!!

    Go Vitor !!!

I can wait to see Tito fight in Affliction

  • fr702 says:

O shhhit whatever I’m down to over discuss this I have no worries damn whynot…. State your case T3…. And mr Zan if you choose to make some case I’m down for a debate as well let me grab some bourbon and get prepaired ready when u are my friend :-)

  • Josh V says:

Can we talk about what an absolutely AWFUL job Tito Ortiz did commenting?

  • gunslinger says:

arlovski is an idiot…he was tooling fedor on the feet and like an idiot threw a flying knee again…just because it worked once doesnt mean it will work again arlovski….i love arlovski but he should know you dont throw flashy moves like that against fedor….good job bye fedor…barnett vs fedor is gonna be great..I think barnett has a great chance…I didnt get to see all the fights i came home late from work because we got really busy…so if anyone knows where to find lindland vs belfort tell me because my usual site doesnt have it up yet

    • dbiz says:

Actually, his mistake was throwing that flying knee too late. When he did the push kick and Fedor was going back into the ropes, a flying knee would likely have knocked him out and maybe sent him over the ropes. Arlovski, however, waited until Fedor came off the ropes and brought the hands up. DING!! Nurr…

  • hockeysucks says:

Haha! Everyone who doubted fedor has been silenced. Now, I’m gonna be one and cheer for Barnett to dethrone him. He is the last one to beat. There are no fighters in the world that fedor needs to fight, except Brock in a year or so. The only other fight is Anderson at 210lbs. The fight is totally possible. He can drop the strap to Barnett, go to ufc and fight Anderson, then Brock. And for a pay day on the way out, he can ko Chuck, or maybe wand.

    • dbiz says:

Barnett is better than Fedor only of you like GIANT FREAKING NIPPLES on saggy man-tits….on someone who can’t finish a fight in 10 minutes of full mount. Jesus that “win” was embarrassing.

  • crowzus says:

great fights, awesome to see big john back, proving his status as the greatest ref… my problem is, where was cung le? where was kimbo? these guys havent fought and you know dana wont hire either of them.. cung hasent fought since march, he and vitor would be a good start.

    • justin says:

Cung Le is under contract with StrikeForce, and its up to them to get him to fight. As far as I know, Kimbo is still under contract with ProElite, and can’t fight until they finally fold…not that I really want to see him fight.

In regards to Dana hiring Cung Le, if Cung picks up a couple more wins, Dana might be interested in him, however, Dana would not let him take the one+ year layoff he’s taken for no reason other than to shoot movies.

  • russiandoeboi says:

with risk of hugging fedor – he is
more in the moment than most.

    he was getting outboxed,
the flying knee wasnt totally bull either ,
he set it up well, it seemed like a good time.
but i get the impression most guys even the elite practice combos, and follow gameplans and back up gameplans.

fyodor says he trys to empty his mind for a fight .

    he really does it.

    – tell me if this sounds like a self help book….

spider seems to have that too.

  • russiandoeboi says:

i think the flying knee timing was as good as any, but covering his chin wouldn’t have been a bad idea.

    tito-isms have relaced bushishms

  • canadamuayguy says:

where can i watch these fights i missed em?

  • canadamuayguy says:

hey KRIS grat job on the site! now the avatars r not covering the comments

  • raffy says:

I cant stand Tito either. Also, Trump sucks. The guy is a snob. The production quality isn’t as good as ufc either. It seems like everything is a little off. What was up with the guy that sounded like he had been smoking a carton of cigarettes a day for the last 25 years interviewing people? And chuck zito? Also affliction needs a cage. The ropes suck.

  • raffy says:

I have moments where Dana really pisses me off but he at least has some personality. Tom acencio is one boring ass dude.

  • windmiller says:

i want to hear what Tito was saying as much as i want to see the fights… he is a dumb ass!

  • FixXeR says:

Good fights….I am kind of baffled on the salaries though.

    Arlovski-$1,200,000 plus($25,000 if he wins)

    Fedor-$300,000

Thats a lot of money to put up for a fighter nobody really expected to win. How is Fedor not the top paid fighter in Affliction. If I remember right, Sylvia made $800,000 for his fight and Fedor only made $300,000 then as well. I guess they have to pay people to chalk a loss up, cause thats waht they know they are gonna get when they get in with Fedor. I guess i would get in there for $1,200,000.

    • fr702 says:

300,000 was Fedor’s “reported” pay, it is guestamated that he (Fedor) made well over 1.5million dollars for the fight, with the M~1 global ties (co~promoting) the show ect… The man was paid well, just because the state of California only will tax Fedor for the 300g’s doesn’t mean that he didn’t make a hell of a lot more

  • Turk says:

Pretty good night of fights. Still don’t think fedor is the p4p best in the world. He was getting out boxed until Arlovski threw that horribly timed fling knee. I thought lindland was never going to be able to walk again after that brutal k.o. The production was better than last time, but still not UFC quality. That announcer that sounded like an 80 year old lung cancer patient should have been sh*t. Imo Fedor needs to beat Brock, the Natural and of course the Spider to be best on the planet. Brock’s size alone causes major problems for fedor. Randy could most likely ground and pound him and Silva would do what he does to everyone else murder him.

  • DR.DOOM says:

Turk ……. Fedor would MURDER the three guys you stated . Anderson silva vs fedor is like having sugar ray leonard vs Ali …. sugar ray was great but ali is the greatest of all time .

  • death says:

I see some people don’t follow MMA…..Fedor has beat about everybody…..Brock would get his a$$ handed to him…Anderson needs to step up in to 205…for some competition….

  • gunslinger says:

imagine kimbo and tito if they were commentaters on the same mma show it would be horrible tito actually said matt lindland was the #2 mdw in the world and he said belfort would beat silva…..sounds to me like tito still cant give up the ufc(I think he still wants to be there he just is trying to bash them whenever possible)…..but anyways that knee by arlovski was totally stupid i dont care what anyone says fedor would not have got caught by the knee even if he was closer…i do believe arlovski could have won that fight if he would not had thrown the knee though and just stayed boxing and throwing leg kicks…i think barnett is can tool fedor if he tries and trains hard enough, barnett is a reallly smart fighter and knows fedor…he has seen fedor fight everyone and is finally getting his shot….barnett will do what lindland should have done!(before fedor grabbed the ropes and used them for leverage to get on top) The payment is ridiculous in affliction though….i like to see fighters get good paydays because they deserve it but im kinda afraid this could turn mma into what boxing has turned into….people starting to only care about the money and not the fans and the sport…but we will see…after this next affliction ppv though i think affliction could be done because once they blow there wamma hw title load who is gonna be the mainevent..heiron,lauzon,lil nog vs babalu, belfort….none of those guys are big enough for a main event spot and i dont wanna see the same people fighting every pay per view

    • justin says:

Assuming they make it to a third event, and Fedor and Barnett even fight. If they do make it to a third event, but can’t convince Fedor and Barnett to fight, their wad will have already been blown, and they will whither and die…unless than can get Overeem to fight Fedor…then they’ll have that one more fight and then be done.

      • dbiz says:

In a Barnett-Fedor fight, I call Barnett to win when Fedor is stopped by a doctor after getting Barnett’s flopping silver dollar nipples in his eyes twice.

      • bsbiz says:

We need to get Greg Jackson’s Nipple Tweak boys on finding out if that would work before Barnett could try it.

    • russiandoeboi says:

yea it’s true that tito seems to reflect on the ufc . probably afflition wants the comparisons, and it seems inevitable.
      but yea good point.

the guy with him is one of the best ive heard though

  • scotchydow says:

Barnett looked very strage last night to me. Anyone else notice how different his body looked? He has never looked like a physical specemin, but he looked REALLY out of shape. He is still a beast, but he better come in better shape for Fedor…… or how does Tito say it……Feadora…..LOL. Maybe he better start a steroid regimund like he did for Randy….?

  • drgreenthumb30 says:

Geeee i wonder how bad BIG brock would pound the hell out of the out of shape barnett??????

  • Spud says:

I was pissed that my boy AA got KO’d. Fedor threw that blind puch and nailed him. If you saw the replays Fedor had his head down and caught my boys glass jaw. It sucks but it shows why Fedor is the best fighter in the world. Arlovski and Fedor are to good for the UFC HWs. Couture is to old and slow, Nog would get KO’d again. Mir would get ground and pounded out or gas out, Lesnar is still to raw to take on a top 3 guy. Fedor is going to kill Barnett, then prob Coture, then Lesnar should be ready to take on a guy of Fedors caliber. I hope AA wins some fights and gets a rematch with him, because like you all said if he didn’t get flashy he prob woulda won. Bring back Vitor to the UFC!

    • justin says:

Re: “Arlovski and Fedor are to(sic) good for the UFC HWS.”

Fedor…maybe but we’ll probably never know. Arlovski, I think not. Arlovski is 1-2 against Tim Sylvia, dropping the last two. Out of his last 5 wins, the only opponent of any quality was Werdum, who he took to a boring decision. Werdum was not even top 5 in the UFC, that’s why he got cut. I think that Arlovski would would lose to all four of the UFC HWs that were in the “tournament”. Maybe AA will win some fights against some more bums in Affliction, and then get a rematch…if Affliction lasts that long.

      • T3chn3tnium says:

agreed. AA is just above a gatekeeper unfortunately. the way Tim knocked him out the first time proved to me that he has a weak chin. weak chins don’t go very far IMO.

  • Arman,Vladimirov says:

I like that alot of people think they are fighting experts and talk about how it was a lucky punch there is no such thing as luck in a fight and who ever say’s so is only trying to ease the pain of their ego being tarnished Fedor won that fight because fedor is a great fighter fedor set that move up it was more than obvious no one was dominating that round both had laned good hit Arlovski was just more agressive than Fedor end result was Fedor landed a clean and aimed over hand right on Arlovski in mid air Alrovski is a good fighter but Fedor is a different breed it will be a very long time if the world ever sees another M.M.A. fighter like him he pound for pound is a world class fighter as was Ali. I am Honored to see a fellow Russian stride through such greatness and be humble and thankful to God for it.

  • Moose says:

I hate those freaking ropes, Sokoudjou was always in the ropes… Get a cage or go UFC… Almost forgot, Tito is a tool.

  • Andrew says:

Fedor was not that impressive to me tonight. Was loosing the fight all around until the punch. He has amazing power but he just hasnt been fighting the people from the top in a while. Would love to see him fight brock or mir just so we could all stop wondering how good he can be. He cant be to much of a competitor or he himself would have already made it happen just to test himself. Guess we will see what happens.

  • russiandoeboi says:

    i dont get it.
josh is 250, moves like a featherweight for 3 rounds.
has a great chin, has subs as good as anyone in MMA, KO’s people.

and you guys are commenting on his body type?

what about fedor. again maybe a little padding is good – remember that gonzaga had to take on hard body kich from crocop before he started the killer ground elbows

  • russiandoeboi says:

barnett would absolutely kill brock – he’s a nasty match up for brock.

i think fedor would be less threat to brock. there is no way he could man handle barnett. fedor is the best but coleman, randleman were able to man handle fedor to some degree. if brock got a sturdy side control and kneed he’d hve a chance against fedor, albeit a small chance.

tito has trouble forming entances but he added color and the kind of angle that only fighters have. the other guy was very good.

joe rogan is very keen and smart (he’d actually be a great corner man) but the other guy is not so keen on what’s going on. although i guess that the ufc wants an ‘everyman’ sort of guy along with rogan so that it’s not for experts only

    • Justin says:

Goldberg and Rogan are the classic “play by play” and “color commentary” combo like Michaels and Madden. Goldberg kinds does the “play by play” and Rogan adds the “color”.

      • bsbiz says:

        “Color”, Justin?

        HE’S GOING FOR A KIMURA!!!!

No, Joe, he’s kneeing a guy in the ribs.

      • Justin says:

“You see, what they’re gonna do is, they’re going to give the ball to the running back and he’s gonna try to get it into the endzone.”

“Thanks Madden, I didn’t know that already!”

        Yes, Rogan fits the role.

  • russiandoeboi says:

one thing that surprised me is that fedor looked chubbier against AA than sylvia yet his weight was a few pounds less.
maybe he pinched a big loaf before the weigh ins?!

  • justin says:

“–Five Oz’s Sam Caplan is hearing talks have already begun to book Fedor vs. Barnett for their next show, which is apparently targeted for sometime this summer (May-July), that is if Affliction puts on a third show.”

So…June sounds about right for Fedor’s typical six month layoff…if Affliction makes it that far.

  • matt says:

how bad at commentry was tito :s

  • Pwater says:

Has anyone even WATCHED Fedor fight? Arlovski might’ve outworked him, but Fedor was never hurt or in trouble, he seemed to just be waiting, waiting, waiting….like always. Except for when he destroyed Sylvia in 36 seconds. Is Tim Sylvia not a top notch fighter anymore? He’s lost some now, but he’s old and fighting the best in the world. You can say what you want about Fedor, but nobody is beating him now are they? He needs the UFC, just so he can face a couple guys. Couture would get beat one way or another, wouldn’t stand a chance. Lesnar would get popped in his nose and submitted just like Sylvia. I honestly thing Frank Mir would stand the best chance of beating him right nwo. He’s smart, he can take a beating, and he sure knows his submissions. Mir hasn’t done a whole lot of losing if you haven’t noticed.

  • Leonidas says:

Pwater, I agree that in UFC Mir has the best chance of beating him right now.

Anyway check out this frame by frame analysis of the fight:

    http://mmalinker.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23513

Also go down in the thread, you will see a couple of gif’s where Fedor just pushes away a jab & an overhand right. It’s quite clear that none of those shots were doing any damage & Fedor was never in any serious trouble, and if anyone deserves for giving Fedor his hardest fight it’s Mirko not some Leonidas looking guy who got ktfo in 3:14 of round 1 of a 25 minute fight.
