Most fans were far from thrilled about how the MacDonald-Ellenberger bout went down at UFC on FOX 8, particularly because of the pre-fight trash talk and “The Juggernaut’s” over-the-top threats. Dana White said the three round fight was “terrible”, before criticizing both MacDonald and Ellenberger for their lackluster and tentative performances.
One man who disagrees, at least on MacDonald’s end, is his teammate Georges St. Pierre. While appearing at a UFC World Tour function in Las Vegas Monday, the renowned fighter stated (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I believe it was a great fight. I texted Rory and said it was a great fight. He stuffed a very, very dangerous opponent in Jake Ellenberger. A lot of people give him criticism, but the truth is – and it’s not only because Rory is my friend and training partner – the truth is we all knew by watching the fight Rory was winning that fight.”
“For someone that knows fighting, I believe it was a great fight (for Rory),” St-Pierre said. “On the other side, for Jake, I don’t believe it was a great fight for Jake. I believe Jake should have done something to try to change the momentum. he did at the end, but it was too late.”
Of course, St. Pierre’s detractors will probably not agree with his assessment, since the welterweight champ has been criticized for not looking to finish fights in the past. That said, it does seem like more of the criticism has been laid at Ellenberger’s feet, for precisely what St. Pierre referred to.
The blame game aside, the UFC has released it’s new rankings and Ellenberger has slipped to #5 because of the loss. Mr. Demian Maia has moved to #4 and “Ares” remains at #3.
