As any MMA fan knows, far too often bouts with a ton of hype fail to live up to expectations, and last night’s Rory MacDonald-Jake Ellenberger bout was one of them. While MacDonald deserves credit for outpointing Ellenberger and securing the win, in what was the biggest fight of his career, obviously that wasn’t enough to stop fans from booing the UFC on FOX 8 tilt.
Not surprisingly, Dana White didn’t have many pleasant things to say about the fight, as the UFC President stated afterwards (quote via FOX press release):
“It was terrible fight. I think if you go out there and if you want to prove you’re one of the best, and your opponent tells you you’re not in the top 10 in the world, and then you don’t do anything to prove him wrong, it shows. Robbie Lawler went out and made an impression. I thought Jake Ellenberger did nothing at all. He tried to do nothing, and so Rory stood on the outside and did just enough to win, but he didn’t try to impose his will on Ellenberger or go for the finish or submit him.”
“When you get these fights where guys talk s–t, those fights always suck,” White said (quote via MMA Junkie.com). “I think that for Ellenberger to go out and say [MacDonald] doesn’t deserve to be in the top-10 and then not go out and try to prove that he doesn’t belong in the top-10…Ellenberger literally did nothing.
MacDonald defended his performance in FUEL TV’s post-fight show by stating:
“I did everything I have to do. I don’t really make a game plan, I react to what I see. Tonight I saw a power puncher who I kept on the outside with the jab and he wouldn’t engage me.”
Regardless of whether fans and pundits agree with MacDonald’s defence, the 24 year-old remains in the title shot mix with the win.
