If all goes according to plan this time around, Douglas Lima and Ben Saunders will finally settle who is Bellator’s Season 8 welterweight tourney winner on September 20th, after their bout has been delayed twice. The fight will headline Bellator 100, which will be hosted by Phoenix’s Grand Canyon University Arena.
Saunders (16-5-2) and Lima (24-5) scored knockout wins in their semifinal bouts over Raul Amaya and Bryan Baker respectively, at Bellator 90 on February 21st. Lima broke his hand during the impressive performance, however, and the competition’s final was pushed back to Bellator 97 on July 31st. The former tourney winner injured his rib while preparing for the fight, and as a result, the bout was delayed again.
Saunders and Lima fought in a tournament final once before in November, 2011, and Lima took the bout via second round stoppage. The welterweight went on to face Bellator champ Ben Askren in April, 2012, but fell by unanimous decision.
“I can’t wait for this fight,” Lima was quoted saying in the official announcement. “I have been injured back to back, but this time I’ll be 100% and we going to have one of the best fights of the year. I am ready to fight for the belt and I am coming hard!”
The Season 9 welterweight tourney will also get underway at Bellator 100, and the promotion has announced the opening round match-ups, which will feature former Octagon competitors like “War Machine” and Matt Riddle. The quarterfinal bouts include: Brent Weedman (21-8-1) vs. Justin Baesman (14-3), War Machine (13-4) vs. Vaughn Anderson (16-1-1), Matt Riddle (7-3) vs. Sergio Junior (29-11) and Mark Scanlon (9-2) vs. Herman Terrado (11-2).
