UFC on FOX 8: MacDonald Out-Points Ellenberger

Rory MacDonald

The co-main event of UFC on FOX 8 featured welterweights Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger battling it out in what was likely a title eliminator. While it was expected to be a hard-hitting grudge match, it looked nothing like it as MacDonald picked up the decision victory.

MacDonald Out-Points Ellenberger

What was expected to be an expected to be an exciting title eliminator turned out to be anything but tonight in Seattle. Rory MacDonald would control range with his jab and occasional front kicks. Ellenberger would try to close the distance and did land a takedown but was unable to do anything with it. MacDonald would get the victory, but may have cost himself a direct shot at the title with his subdued performance that left UFC president Dana White very unhappy.

Rd. 1- No touch of gloves tonight. Nice jab by Rory kicks off the action. Extended feeling out process taking place so far. Headkick attempt by Ellenberger comes up short. Both fighters seem to not want to make the first mistake that could end the fight. Nice jab by Rory is paired with headkick that misses. Ellenberger storms forward and connects with a knee and some punches in the clinch. Every time Ellenberger attacks Rory simply evades. Ellenberger looks for power and misses. Brief clinch but nothing comes of it. MMAFrenzy has it 10-10.

Rd. 2-¬†Fans are restless now as very little seems to be landing. Ellenberger storms for a takedown and while it’s blocked, he lands some nice punches on the exit. More jabs by Rory. Rory tries for a takedown but is easily shucked off by Ellenberger. Ellenbeger charges again but nothing connects well. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 MacDonald (20-19).

Rd. 3- MacDonald is now flicking front kicks and jabs to keep Ellenberger at distance. Swarm by Ellenberger but again Rory evades. Takedown by Ellenberger and he is looking to posture up and attack. Rory is controlling posture though and tries an omoplata as the round ends. Not an entertaining fight at all. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Ellenberger, making it a draw (29-29) but expect it to go to Rory.
