Just when the MMA world was busy discussing this Saturday’s UFC on FOX 8 card, Viacom and Bellator have managed to capture at least some of the spotlight, with news that “Rampage” Jackson might box Roy Jones Jr. While some fans may have been expecting word to come out by now that the bout’s a no go, so far, signs seem to indicate that the promotion is about to announce something pretty big at a minimum.
After MMA Junkie.com reported that a Jackson-Jones Jr. match is in the works for a year end pay-per-view, “Rampage’s” manager Anthony McGann has relayed that talks regarding the rumored fight have been ongoing for months. While speaking to MMA Fighting.com, McGann stopped short of confirming the bout, but he did say the promotion has some significant plans.
“What I can say is that the Bellator/Viacom strategy for entering into the pay-per-view market is a very interesting one,” McGann said. “It is innovative and will be announced at the Bellator event in Albuquerque on the 31st of this month.”
“Fans can expect this thing to be rolled out somewhat dramatically, and I suggest that everyone tunes in for a very entertaining event with plenty of unexpected elements that will have the MMA world talking for many weeks to follow.”
The report adds that according to sources, both Jackson and Jones Jr. will be in attendance at next Wedndesday’s event. McGann added that “both MMA and boxing have been discussed”, but it’s hard to envision Jones Jr. meeting Jackson in a MMA fight.
Bellator 97 already has plenty of reasons to catch the card, as lightweight champ Michael Chandler will battle David Rickels, and welterweight champion Ben Askren will face Andrey Koreshkov. Plus, “King Mo” Lawal will take on Jacob Noe in the light-heavyweight tourney finale. Could turn out to be a pretty eventful night.
