Gadelha Dominates Hamasaki
Late-replacement Claudia Gadelha impressed tonight in KC with a devastating performance over the talented Ayaka Hamasaki. While Gadelha would have a point deducted for an illegal knee in the first, she would dominate the entire fight with dominant striking and grappling over the Japanese champion. Gadelha’s domination of the division’s number one contender likely secures a shot a champion Carla Esparza.
Taylor Edges D’Alelio
Lauren Taylor stayed perfect tonight but needed to overcome a serious deficit to do so against Sarah D’Alelio. D’Alelio had Taylor in a ton of trouble early with a dominant submission attack that Taylor just barely managed survive. Taylor would find her striking range in the second round and utilized accurate boxing to take control of the final two frames to stay perfect in her MMA career.
Smith Defeats Maia in Thriller
Leslie Smith made a successful debut at flyweight by defeating Jennifer Maia in a thrilling fight. While Maia challenged throughout the majority of the fight, Smith’s pace proved too much when the fight hit the closing moments. Smith attacked everywhere the fight went with a mix of striking and submissions that would have forced a stoppage from most fighters. The victory firmly plants Smith in the flyweight title picture.
Penne Taps Rivera-Calanoc
Former atomweight champion Jessica Penne wanted to make a statement when she faced Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc tonight in KC. Penne certainly did that tonight. Penne would stay standing for a bit before getting the fight into her realm on the ground. Once the fight hit the ground, Penne was in control as she attacked with multiple submissions before taking her opponent’s back and forcing a tap with only three ticks left in the round.
