Sean Sherk vs. Frank Edgar Added To UFC 98

Sean Sherk

Sean Sherk

Lightweights Sean Sherk and Frank Edgar will square off in a featured bout at UFC 98 on May 23rd in Las Vegas, according to MMA Mania.

Sherk (36-3-1), a former 155-pound title-holder, earned three straight victories over Nick Diaz, Kenny Florian, and Hermes Franca between 2006 and 2007, but was stripped of the lightweight belt and suspended after testing positive for steroids following his win over Franca in July 2007. Sherk immediately challenged champion BJ Penn for the title upon returning to the octagon last May, but suffered a third-round TKO. He rebounded from the loss with a unanimous decision victory over Tyson Griffin in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC 90 in October.

A four-time collegiate wrestling national qualifier at Clarion University, Edgar (9-1) began his UFC career with three straight wins over Tyson Griffin, Mark Bocek, and Spencer Fisher, but suffered his first career loss to Gray Maynard last April. He bounced back from the loss in July with a unanimous decision victory over former 155-pound challenger Hermes Franca.

I expect this to be like Sherk v. Griffin, the two wrestlers will take their chances with each other on the feet, until one feels like he’s clearly losing and then they’ll go for a takedown. However, I do believe that the needle, err muscle shark’s wrestling is better than Edgar’s and could probably find an easy decision via LnP if he chose to go that route, but that wouldn’t get him any closer to a title shot, I don’t think.

thats a sweet fight, Edgar will be a world champion in the future but i think sherks got the beating of him for the time being.

  • Jazzkok says:

Sherk’s going to over power him and just like maynard did and win a decision. The only way to beat a wrestler is to stop is shoots and out strike him. Examples GSP vs SHERK Bj Penn vs SHERk.

  • JOHNBOY says:

sherk will kick his ass easy! edgar will not be champ. never!

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

if u believe itll b like sherk v griffin then edgars got this. out of the 2 i say edgars got the better strikin which if it stays on the feet gives him the advantage. and mayb this is just me but does anyone else think sherks tryin to become a slugger so well forget his roid usage? i mean its obvious his wrestling is probably the top in that 155 division yet against bj and griffin i think he attempted 2 mayb 3 takedowns in all.

  • Myke D says:

Edgar i think has better hands than sherk. Sherk may be stronger but Edgar can damn sure wrestle. Edgar is a bad little dude.

  • DaNNyBoY says:

another lay and pray by sherk, does anyone even remember the last time he finished a fight?

  • ufcmanz says:

Sherk takes this fight because Edgar cann’t handle strenghter wrestlers, this fight maybe a good fight but I believe the out come is Sherk 9/10 times, this fight should of been Maynard Vs. Sherk… Maynard was the last guy to out wrestle Edgar , would only make sense if you put the 2 best wrestlers in there together. Maynard is 4-0-1 in the UFC with his last 2 wins coming from Frank Edgar , Rich Clementi… I think it’s time the UFC gave him a real test like Sherk to see if he’s got what it take to be a top contender??

  • ufcmanz says:

    This fight have is a fight the UFC is confident that Sherk well win yet be not stop action, so Sherk has 3 wins and after Edgar he’ll get a title shot after Ken Flo, UFC is trying to set Sherk up for a Title shot for a good PPV , {Sherk vs Penn/Ken Flo 2}

  • jeremy says:

t thought i heard a rumor about sherk and huerta were supposed to be fighting. if not i wonder who huerta’s next fight wll be?

  • gunslinger says:

SHERKS GOT THIS EASILY! IMO…I JUST DONT THINK FRANKIE HAS GOOD ENOUGH WRESTLING TO STOP SHERKS SHOTS …..IF SHERK WINS ID SAY PUT SHERK IN THERE WITH MAYNARD…MAYNARD SHERK IS AN AWESOME FIGHT THAT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE WINNER FACES THE WINNER OF BJ/KENFLO AFTER GSP BEATS PENN….I WOULD USUALLY BE ROOTING FOR BJ BUT WITH THIS CIRCUMSTANCE I CANT HELP BUT HOPE GSP DESTROYS HIM….ITS JUST BETTER THAT WAY…THEN WE CAN SEE BJ/KENFLO AND GSP/ALVES

  • Us And Chuck says:

First off Kris i like the look of the site it looks more professional ;)

This a great fight on paper but i can’t see Sherk loosing this he is IMO the best LW barring Penn (Florian has improved since his fight with Sherk) i feel sorry for him he is kind of the Rich Franklin of LW in terms of he will never beat the No 1

  • bzul3 says:

Sherk takes this one all the way. I believe that the result of BJ vs GSP will let us know how interesting this match is gonna be. I dont think there is too much doubt that Sherk will win this, its just what happens after he does. Best case scenario is that BJ loses so the LW division can go on as usual. If this happens, I believe this match actually will become a title eliminator. By the the time this match takes place, Florian vs Penn would already be in place, with Sherk being the number 1 contender if he wins. The last thing the UFC wants is to match Sherk vs Florian with neither of the two having the belt. Its a waste of two possible main events. And I really wanna see GSP vs Anderson Silva, and that would be ruined with a BJ victory. Just some random thoughts….

  • joshsmith says:

YES i cant wait for this one

  • Brizza says:

    Edgar shocks all w/upset!

  • UFC fan says:

i really like GSP and don’t reallly like the spider ,but i have to say the spider would kill GSP

  • Ace says:

Heres the bottom line for those who think Frankie will end up with a victory, just against Maynard, he’s up against a much stronger guy in Sean Sherk, go back and watch Sherk vs France or Sherk vs Florian, both guys were significantly weaker than Sherk and he simply out classed them, this will be deja vu all over again…AND yes Sherk has been testing his striking game..TESTING..I believe had he stuck with his typical style against Penn, Sherk would have won the fight by decision and right now be the current light weight champion. We’ll get back to that though eventually, Sherk vs Penn 2 that is or even Sherk vs Florian 2

As for Sherk not being able to finish a fight, yall ever sit down and think that maybe finishing the fight is not his intention, I mean I don’t wanna see any 1st or 2nd round KO’s or tapouts, I wouldn’t be getting my moneys worth out of a f***** $50.00 pay-per-view, a fight that goes the distance and is an all out war is a more exciting fight than a fight with an early finish, THATS A FACT! Maybe its Sherks intention to deliver that kind of fight to UFC fans, I mean once he gets his arms wrapped around the legs or waist of his opponent, 100% of the time they’re goin for a ride lol.

Steroids huh? Did anyone out there read about the several batches of Xzience supplements that were tainted and laced with agents found in steroids, well it happened and it just so happens a lot of UFC athletes take Xzience supplements, maybe Sherk took more than the recommended dose and it showed up on his piss test or maybe what a lot of people believe the test was false, it happens quite often.

But back on subject and topic, I see Sherk out working and controling the entire fight against an undersized Frankie Edgar, thus putting Sherk one fight away from title contention, a good scenario would be for the winner of this fight to get the winner of the Sanchez and Guida fight, then the winner gets the winner of the Penn and Florian championship bout.

i went to high school w/ frankie, he’s a bad little dude trust me..his work ethic is just ridiculous…..just on pride alone he’ll make this a great fight….i agree he might be overmatched here, but hes a smart kid….if he realizes early he has to keep the fight off the mat, he will, and to be honest he might prefer that..he probably knows its his best shot….i’ve learned not to doubt this kid, so don’t write him off im telling ya…
