MMAFrenzy’s coverage of tonight’s UFC 162 PPV continues with our recap of tonight’s bout between Roger Gracie and Tim Kennedy. It was a rather grinding bout, with Kennedy seizing control later in the fight with his superior conditioning and wrestling.
Kennedy Wears Down Gracie
Tim Kennedy eased some pressure tonight at UFC 162, as he wore down Roger Gracie over three rounds. Gracie looked good early but faded as Kennedy was unafraid to grapple with the BJJ champion. Kennedy broke Gracie mentally, with powerful strikes. Kennedy out-struck Gracie at a nearly 10-1 rate tonight in Vegas. Kennedy has now won two straight since dropping a decision to Luke Rockhold last July for the Strikeforce title.
Rd. 1- Legkick by Kennedy to start the fight. Kennedy is looking to get inside but ends up getting taken down and Gracie has his back. Tim with a nice escape and he takes control of the clinch. Legkick by Kennedy. Gracie with a knee but Kennedy works through it. Takedown by Gracie but he eats a big right from the bottom. Gracie takes his back but Kennedy is defending wisely and isn’t panicking. Body triangle by Roger but he’s looking high for an armabr but Kennedy reverses and ends in half-guard. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Gracie.
Rd. 2- High five to start Round 2. Kennedy with a legkick and seizes control in the clinch and lands a trip takedown to side control. Back mount by Tim and he lands big shots. Kennedy evades the foot lock. Kennedy with more big shots but Gracie works up. Kennedy controlling the clinch again though. Knees by Kennedy. Over the top elbow by Kennedy. Back trip by Kennedy again and he has half guard. Gracie is in a deep half, which is bad for MMA. Gracie recovers guard and locks up Kennedy. Kennedy looks at the referee and is granted a standup.Clinch by Kennedy and he lands a few knees as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Kennedy (19-19).
Rd. 3- Kennedy with legkicks to start the third. Kennedy takes Gracie’s back while standing and lands good knees here. Gracie looks dead while Tim looks fresh. Kennedy with an elbow after a clinch break. Gracie has no offense as Kennedy is trying to find his chin. Gracie’s leg is banged up. Kennedy is swarming cautiously with 030 left. Gracie is mentally done. MMAFrenzy has the round and the fight for Kennedy 29-28.
Tim Kennedy def. Roger Gracie via unanimous decision (30-27,30-27,29-28)
