If you were surprised to hear Dana White relay Thursday that he plans to meet with Roy Jones Jr. this weekend, as a result of Anderson Silva’s recent and repeated statements saying he wants to fight the renowned boxer, get ready to be shocked again. According to Yahoo’s Kevin Iole, who is a veteran boxing and MMA writer, Jones Jr. has confirmed that not only is he talking with White soon, but that he plans to discuss the possibility of a MMA fight. Iole tweeted:
I’m stunned, but I just got a text from @RealRoyJonesJr and he said he is planning to talk to @danawhite about fighting MMA. Whoa.
Yes, Iole likely isn’t the only one who’s stunned. In a follow up tweet he then reported that he’s also talked with ZUFFA exec Lorenzo Fertitta, who confirmed they are going to talk with Jones, but that he “doesn’t want a freak show.”
Now before people start losing their minds from either excitement or annoyance, this doesn’t mean Jones Jr. could be headed to an Octagon anytime soon. One would think these talks are extremely preliminary. In addition, if Fertitta doesn’t want a “freak show”, then one could also assume Jones Jr. wouldn’t transition right into a fight with Silva.
Then again, James Toney was matched up against one the sport’s greatest fighters ever in Randy Couture back in 2010, but we all saw how that turned out (Couture submitted Toney in the first round at UFC 118). Toney was 42 years old back then. Jones Jr. is 44.
