Having tapped out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC on FUEL TV 10 last month to extend his winning streak to three, Fabricio Werdum has reportedly begun campaigning for his next fight. And who is the decorated grappler reportedly interested in fighting? Fellow Strikeforce vet Daniel Cormier.
While speaking to the media Thursday, UFC President Dana White relayed that he’s been talking to Werdum about his next bout, and that any speculation that the Brazilian heavyweight is interested in fighting Cormier is on the mark (quote via MMA Junkie.com).
“Werdum was in my office two days ago. That’s probably where the rumor came from. That’s who he wants to fight, but well see what happens.”
Considering Werdum is currently ranked #3 in the heavyweight division, and the #1 contender Junior dos Santos will fight champion Cain Velasquez in October, there aren’t a lot of bouts that make sense for “Vai Cavalo”. Since the #2 ranked Daniel Cormier isn’t currently booked for a bout, a fight with Werdum would certainly be a good opportunity for either man, even if Cormier is planning to move to light-heavyweight in the coming months.
Cormier (12-0) hasn’t fought since UFC on FOX 7 in April, when he worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Frank Mir. Although the former Olympic wrestler is undefeated and is already within reach of a title shot, Cormier says he doesn’t want to fight his AKA teammate Velasquez. If dos Santos were able to defeat Velasquez in their rubber match, however, and Cormier took out Werdum, then things could get interesting.
A win over Cormier would likely entrench a title shot for Werdum (17-5-1), whether Velasquez or dos Santos is champ. It’s a compelling bout, if and when it happens.
