Veteran middleweight Frank Trigg will make his 2009 debut at XCF’s “Rumble in Race Town” on February 14th at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, coinciding with NASCAR’s premiere debut event, the Daytona 500.

Since leaving the UFC in 2005, Trigg has compiled a 6-2 record, including wins in his last three-straight bouts over Edwin Dewees,  Makoto Takimoto, and Falaniko Vitale.

“I am excited to be headlining at XCF’s ‘Rumble In Race Town’ and working with Bland Sports to bring MMA to a whole new audience,” said Trigg in the press release. “We had several options this year for fights, but NASCAR racing and the Daytona 500 is the biggest of the big. So fighting the night before the 500 is something I could not turn down. Come February 14th my engine will be primed and ready to roll.”

“What more could the fan base of both sports ask for in one weekend?” said Doug Bland, Founder of XCF. “With over 200,000 people expected in Daytona that weekend, it allows the Xtreme Cagefighting Federation the opportunity to help make history by introducing each sports fan base to something new. Having Frank Trigg to help make that introduction of MMA to racing fans is incredible.”

Trigg’s opponent has not yet been determined for the headlining bout.

Former UFC fighters Terry Martin, Jesse Taylor and Jeremy May are also scheduled to be in action, along with former All-Pro Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defensive End, Marcus Jones and Daytona native Todd Cutler.

I think there is a good possibility that a lot of race fans are already MMA fans, however, I don’t know that people in Daytona for “Race Week” will be taking their Saturday night before the 500 to go see a fight.

That’s cool, but “UFC vets”, Jermey May and Jesse Taylor??? Not exactly Vets after A fight in the UFC but hey it just annoys me I guess..

Twinkle Toes has be consistant over his carrer and perhaps he can win a few more in a row and go out on a high note..

I think this could be big for XCF. Although I know absolutely nothing of the promotion, having a show the night before the big race is smart. You’ve got thousands upon thousands of drunks looking for something to do.
And here goes another pro wrestling comparison: WCW did the Daytona 500 thing with Bash at the Beach in ‘97 and it was among the events to catapult them into a multi-million dollar revenue machine. Now justin (and a lot more of you I’m sure), I know you hate pro wrestling and comparing it to mma. But you need to look at the context. I talk only of business strategies. MMA and pro wrestling have the exact same target audience. How do you think UFC got back into the ppv market when they were seen as the dirtiest sport in town? WCW went bankrupt and the companies needed something to fill the void.

Or…… The Brothers Fertitta and Dana White lobbied to get a sanctioning body behind their product and moved forward and had their sport legalized, and get it back on PPV.. Either way

Jackpot. Once a Vegas casino owner got involved, it didn’t take long for Nevada to recognize and sanction the UFC. Once that was done and the money started coming, it was just a matter of time before others followed suit.

        Politics. Gotta love em.

I just want to point out that you used WCW as an example of putting on an event at the Daytona 500 as a good business decision, and that they went out of business (four years later, mind you) in the same paragraph. Unfortunately your latter point sort of negates the former, at least in my eyes.

I feel as tho I’ve read that post before somewhere hmmm interesting owell deja vu, something must be wrong with the Matrix where’s Neo?

      • justin says:

They’ve changed something… oh no, Kimbo’s not a legitimate MMA fighter now…oh… wait… never mind.

      • eldiablo says:

Yeah, they were huge in 97, then got bought in 2001 and then subsequently got put to sleep. That happens in business: huge profits one year, then profit trickles down to a halt. Read the context buddy. Storylines that went nowhere and oversaturation of the market is what killed WCW, but I`m sure you`re much too young to remember that.
And Kris, nice to see you read Total MMA. It`s true the Ferditta`s had a huge hand in legalizing“ mma, and thus bringing it to ppv, but without that huge timeslot left void by WCW, who knows. Besides the point, without pro wrestling, there would be no mma. Period.

Re: “but I`m sure you`re much too young to remember that.”

Wrongo! I remember very well WCWs rise, fall, and eventual purchase, along with the purchase of ECW, the cutting of several wrestlers from the WWE roster, and the subsequent creation of TNA to give those guys a home. I even remember TNA being PPV only, then eventually showing recorded shows on SPIKE. I’m not sure how you figure that over saturation killed WCW, there were four wrestling shows on a week then (WCW: Monday and Wednesday WWE: Monday and Thursday) Now there are three (I think…I quit following it several years ago, shortly after the WCW purchase). The WCWs problem was that they were competing head to head with WWE on Monday’s and lost, because they had an inferior product.

I’m also old enough that I remember when UFC 3 and 5 were held in Charlotte, NC. The assertion that MMA would not exist without “pro wrestling” is, to say the least, a bit extreme. MMA lends its existence more to Gracie Jui-Jitsu than “pro wrestling”, because without the Gracie family’s extreme confidence in their fighting style and desire to promote it in the US, there would not have been a UFC 1, which paved the way for MMA.

      • gunslinger says:

no mma without wrestiling????…i question that theory

theres only a few ways i think you could go with a statement like no mma without and thats

        no mma without the gracies
        no mma without dana white
        no mma(mainstream) without T.U.F.

      • eldiablo says:

ok, maybe I was a bit bold in the “no pro wrestling = no mma” theory. But think about this: in the early days of UFC, the fighters needed suplementary income. Pro wrestling provided suplementary income for some of the early headliners. Pancrase itself was borderline pro wrestling. The early days of the Lion’s Den which produced many of the early true mixed martial artists was funded by Shamrock’s Pancrase and WWF income. UFC did not start paying well enough for the average fighter to live off of that alone. Also, PRIDE was formed by ex pro wrestlers and the early roster was almost exclusively ex/current Japanese pro wrestlers. And I really think that if PRIDE wasn’t around when the UFC was hurting, mma would not have become as big as it is in North America.

      • justin says:

Japanese pro wrestling is not quite the same thing as Vince McMahon’s pro wrestling. Sure, Shammy funded his stuff with his WWE money, but lots of other fighters, that were doing MMA while he was doing wrestling, did not have anything to do with it. Has pro wrestling helped MMA, probably, but you can’t say that MMA wouldn’t be here today without it.

  • gunslinger says:

ya wwe and tna! am i the only guy who likes both mma and pro wrestling/ soap opera

  • FR702 says:

    • chokeout says:

I went looking for cutler stuff and that boy has jacked some people up. May is a decent fighter but I think that cutler guy may be on to something. Cutler by Ko. Trigg decaps his guy too.

  • Jesse says:

Trigg isn’t fighting on this card anymore. I think he didn’t like the money he was offered. Anyway like secret said Cutler is the man to watch.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

  • Bumper says:

Todd Cutler, Like his trainer Jason Quigley said, is a diamond in the rough. Black belt in Judo, Brown belt in BJJ, Wrestling and Boxing since he was 13 and the punch and kick of a mule! He’s got it all.
