UFC 164 has probably booked it’s final bout, as the promotion has announced that former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner will take on highly regarded vet Gleison Tibau at the August 31st event. The match-up is the 12th fight to be scheduled for the August 31st card, which will go down at Milwaukee’s Bradley Center.
Varner (21-7-1) will look to build on the split decision win he scored over Melvin Guillard at UFC 155 last December, which followed his submission loss to Joe Lauzon at UFC on FOX 4 in August. Lauzon is the only man to defeat Varner in his last five bouts, who has put together a nice run, after exiting from the WEC with a four fight winless streak.
Tibau (27-9) tapped out John Cholish at UFC on FX 8 in last outing, after losing by split decision to Evan Dunham at UFC 156 in February. The massive lightweight is 3-2 in his last five fights, and his other loss during that stretch came against Khabib Nurmagomedov. The American Top Team vet is also the last man to defeat surging lightweight Raphael dos Anjos, by handing him a split decision loss in November, 2011.
That’s a solid addition to a card, which although it may be getting overshadowed by UFC on FS1 1, has plenty of intriguing match-ups. In addition to the headliner between lightweight champ Benson Henderson and TJ Grant, UFC 164 will feature Frank Mir vs. Josh Barnett, Chad Mendes vs. Clay Guida and Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier.
