Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is one of the sport’s greatest heavyweights ever, and in addition to the accolades and fame that his career has produced, it’s also prompted call outs. Yes, just a couple of weeks removed from Nogueira’s submission loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC on FUEL TV 10, the 25 year-old Stefan Struve is calling for a bout with the 37 year-old legend. Speaking via his Twitter feed, Struve posted:
Bigger they are, harder they fall huh @Minotauromma , lets back those words up and sign the contract, I’m waiting for you.. @danawhite@ufc
As of Wednesday afternoon “Big Nog” had not responded to the tweet. Struve is coming off a knockout loss to Mark Hunt in March, which broke the 6’11” tall fighter’s jaw. Prior to the defeat, Struve had been moving up the heavyweight ranks, by defeating the likes of Pat Barry, Dave Herman, Lavar Johnson and Stipe Miocic. The Dutch fighter has gone 9-4 to date with the UFC.
Nogueira did not fracture his arm, as result of his submission loss to Werdum, but the former PRIDE champ did incur ligament damage and had surgery to repair it. As a result, the Brazilian is expected to be sidelined for a couple of months. Before facing Werdum, Nogueira tapped out Dave Herman at UFC 153 last October, to return to the winning column after he had his arm broken by Frank Mir in December, 2011.
Could Struve versus Nogueira happen? It’s possible. As a result of his recent loss, “Minotauro” is no longer ranked in the UFC’s top ten, and he may be interested in fighting a rising fighter like Struve. If Struve keeps up the “I’m waiting for you” shtick then probably more so. Although, Struve did relay in a recent interview with Bleacher Report that he respects Nogueira and that he’s always been “one of my favorites”. Chances are it would be a pretty entertaining fight.
