MMAFrenzy’s live coverage of UFC 161 kicks off with our coverage of tonight’s Facebook preliminary card. In the second bout of the evening, Mitch Clarke defeated John Maguire in a grinding bout. In other action, Yves Jabouin defeated Dustin Pague in tonight’s opener.
Clarke picks up emotional win over Maguire
In the second bout of the evening, Canada’s Mitch Clarke picked up a victory over Joh Maguire. Clarke looked better in all phases of the game against a mostly listless Maguire. The victory was Clarke’s first in the Octagon, and this was an emotional one after losing his first two fights in the cage. Maguire is likely on his way out of the UFC after this loss, his third in a row.
Jabouin edges Pague in Opener
Yves Jabouin and Dustin Pague got UFC 161 off to a blistering start with strong showing from the two fighters. The story of the fight was the submission attack of Pague and the defense of Jabouin. After a first round that could have gone to either fighter and definitive second round to Pague, it all came down to third frame.
Jabouin would control the majority of the first round from top control until a dubious stand up and missed illegal knee put him in a bit of danger. In the end, the judges would render a split decision in favor of Jabouin, much to the chagrin of many watching the fight. While Pague has now lost three straight, he can only hope that the questionable decision grants him one more chance.
