The UFC’s trip to Toronto has a main event on tap for UFC 165 as UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will be taking on number one contender Alexander Gustafsson. UFC president Dana White made the announcement at today’s UFC 161 media day.
UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is coming off a dominant performance against Chael Sonnen at UFC 159. Jones suffered a gruesome toe injury at the event, but it appears most of the damage was superficial as he avoided a more serious injury.
Alexander Gustafsson has won six straight fights since a 2010 loss to Phil Davis. Gustafsson was supposed to fight Gegard Mousasi at UFC on FUEL TV 9 before a cut suffered late in training scrapped the bout. It appears to have all worked out however, as he will still get his title shot.
Jones defeated Vitor Belfort in Toronto last fall after UFC 151 imploded. UFC 165 will mark the second year in a row that he will defend his title in the Canadian city. This will be the third time that Jones will defend his title in Toronto.
UFC 165 will take place Septemeber 21 and will mark the fourth time the UFC has traveled to the city. More bouts are expected to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
