Roy Nelson may have done the UFC a solid by agreeing to step in and fight Stipe Miocic at UFC 161, but as it turns out, it’s also the last bout on his current contract with the promotion. In case you don’t know, Nelson has been on quite the tear as of late, so if he takes out Miocic on Saturday night, he’ll enter free agency having won four straight fights. That’s not a bad position to be in when it’s time to hit the bargaining table.
In a recent report from the Las Vegas Sun, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Saturday will be the last bout on Nelson’s current deal and that “He’s not giving us any extensions.” When Nelson was asked about how negotiations were going with the UFC, the outspoken fighter said he had “no idea,” and that “I have people for that.” Later on in the story, however, the 36 year-old heavyweight stated:
“You’re working for a business and you’re getting paid $30 an hour, but you’re working for them and you’re an electrician and they’re charging $150 an hour,” Nelson said. “It doesn’t quite make sense”
Of course, as most folks know, “Big Country” and White aren’t exactly pals, and the above statement probably isn’t going to rebuild bridges. More recently, the UFC President sarcastically referred to the former TUF winner as “the smartest guy on earth”. Nelson called the comment “freaking humorous” and added “It’s the best compliment Dana has ever said to me” (wink-wink). Oh, and Nelson has in turn, printed the comment on a line of t-shirts, which according to him are flying off the racks.
So, based off White and Nelson’s current relationship, one might be tempted to conclude that the powerful slugger could be headed elsewhere if he loses to Miocic. Maybe Nelson’s headed out the door even if he wins, depending on how poorly talks go. One thing’s for sure, If Nelson scores another big KO at UFC 161, the calls for him to get a title shot will be that much louder.
