It may still seem weird to hear “Rampage” Jackson talk about his new deal with Bellator, but now that it’s been one week since the agreement was announced, it’s starting to sink in (yes, his appearance on TNA Wrestling helped). Of course it will be interesting to see how Jackson performs in the Bellator cage (or if a spinning back-fist spoiler arises), and whether the charismatic fighter captures the attention of a wide audience in his new promotional home.
There’s no questioning the fact that when “Rampage” is excited about his fighting career, he is one of the sport’s most intriguing and entertaining figures. This is a big reason why Bellator was so interested in acquiring his services, even though the 34 year-old fighter dropped his last three UFC appearances. Jackson is still a big name and should bring new viewers to Bellator and SPIKE.
While appearing on the latest edition of “The MMA Hour”, Jackson and host Ariel Helwani discussed his ability to draw fans to Bellator who only watch the UFC, and the former champ made this interesting comment.
“I’m not going to convert those fans,” he said. “If they’re negative fans, or they’re UFC sheep, they don’t know the world of MMA.”
Although there’s some truth in what Jackson is saying, Bellator would certainly love to convert ‘UFC only’ fans, otherwise, they likely wouldn’t have made this deal.
Jackson reiterated reasons why he’s happy to be out of the UFC, and also admitted that he doesn’t really want to do, nor does he expect to compete in tournaments. That said, because he’s a “team player”, he’ll compete in one if needed. Considering tournaments are the cornerstone of Bellator, one would think that request will come sooner or later.
