With Antonio Rogerio Nogueira no longer competing at UFC 161, due to a reported back injury, Chael Sonnen is already jumping on the opportunity and is campaigning to fight “Shogun” Rua at the June 15th event. If you’re surprised by this, well, you shouldn’t be. After all, this is the same man who offered to jump in and fight Jon Jones last September, when Dan Henderson had to drop out of the doomed UFC 151 card.
In Sonnen fashion, the former middleweight and light-heavyweight contender didn’t just announce on Twitter that’s he’s interested in fighting Rua, instead he offered this doozy of a quote:
“@ShogunRua I HEAR BRAZILIAN CHICKEN IS OFF THE MENU. AMERICAN GANGSTER IS STILL AVAILABLE IF YOU WANT TO SEND YOUR WAITRESS OVER,”
Assuming of course that he is in fact talking about fighting Rua at the event, which will be hosted by Winnipeg’s MTS Centre.
Sonnen has yet to be booked for another bout, since he was quickly put away by light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones at UFC 159 in April. The charismatic vet called out Wanderlei Silva shortly after the bout, albeit with a deadline for Silva to accept the fight attached, and so far nothing’s been confirmed.
Rua, meanwhile, is looking to rebound from the unanimous decision loss he incurred versus the rising Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on FOX 5 in December. The former champ has gone 3-2 in his last five fights, and needs a win to stay in the title shot hunt.
From a promoting stand-point, one would think the UFC would be happy to add Sonnen to the UFC 161 card, which has already suffered the loss of interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao, who will no longer fight Eddie Wineland due to injury. Whether “Shogun” wants to fight Sonnen, who is a dramatically different type of fighter than Nogueira, remains to been seen, assuming that fight is even offered.
