Last week Alexander Gustafsson sent a buzz throughout the MMA world by tweeting that a fight between himself and Jon Jones “is on”, and that he “cant wait to get in that cage ” with the light-heavyweight champ. Naturally it led to widespread speculation that the UFC was close to signing the fight, since Jones has been up front about the fact he wants to fight the Swedish star next. “I’m really hoping for it, and I think I will get the fight. I think I will be offered a title fight very soon. Nothing is set or signed, though.”
Gustafsson also relayed that “I’m not going to be quiet anymore” and that he really wants to throw down with Jones, which explains the tone of his aforementioned tweet and why it was misconstrued. So, considering Gustafsson’s confidence that a bout with Jones is coming, coupled with the fact that Jones relayed on Twitter that a camp could be on the horizon, one could conclude that this fight is close to being tabled. If it’s not Gustafsson, then who’s next for Jones? Silva? The middleweight champ still has to get through Chris Weidman on July 6th, emerge unscathed, and then the UFC would have to negotiate and sign the biggest fight in the sport’s history.
