In April, Josh Thomson became the latest Strikeforce vet to wow UFC audiences, as the former lightweight champ scored an impressive stoppage win over the promotion’s former number one contender, Nate Diaz. Thomson was hoping to make a big splash in his Octagon return, and now having done that, he’s not far out from a title fight with Benson Henderson.
In a recent interview with MMA Junkie.com, the 34 year-old Thomson relayed once again that he’s gunning for Henderson, by noting “I’m not focused on anybody else except for Benson.” Of course, considering what Thomson has accomplished throughout his decade plus career, that’s not surprising.
While Thomson will likely need to score at least one more high profile win before he gets tapped for a title shot, the American Kickboxing Academy fighter likes his chances against the champ.
“I think we match up pretty damned well,” Thomson said. “If we ever fight, it’s going to be a good fight. I think you could see something like the [Gilbert Melendez trilogy]. Stylistically, we put on a good show.”
After all, considering how close Melendez came to unseating Henderson, who’s a man Thomson has had three memorable bouts with, you can see his point. Thomson also defended the flack Henderson has received from critics, noting that the champ is dealing with a “stacked division.” Stacked it is.
