While four of the five UFC 160 main card bouts went the way most fans and pundits expected, TJ Grant proved plenty of people wrong (including this slow witted MMA writer) by not only defeating Gray Maynard, but by doing so in just over two minutes. Thanks to the awe inspiring performance, Grant will now take on UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson, who wasn’t afraid to admit he also picked Maynard.
While appearing on the latest addition of “The MMA Hour”, Henderson had this to say about Grant’s latest victory.
“I won’t lie, I am a little bit surprised. “I think most people had Gray winning, most people picked Gray to win. Not only did T.J. prove everybody wrong, but the manner and the fashion in which he did it, pretty impressive performance for him.”
Yes, it certainly was. Henderson also added that he had been “kind of mentally preparing” to fight Maynard, before conceding:
“I don’t know a whole lot about T.J., to be honest. I know he’s, what, 5-0 at 155 now. He used to be a ’70 pounder. From what I’ve seen of him, just the little promos and hype and stuff, doesn’t seem too flashy but just one of those guys, a grinder, good fundamentals, solid.”
There’s no official word yet as to when the promotion might book the Grant-Henderson bout, but UFC President Dana White has said that they are considering placing the fight on the August 17th, UFC on Fox Sports 1 card in Boston. Whenever and wherever it takes place, it should be a good one.
Henderson will be fighting for the first time since UFC on FOX 7 in April, when he squeaked by Gilbert Melendez with a split decision win.
