Pyle Edges Story
Mike Pyle pulled off a comeback for the ages tonight against Rick Story. Pyle survived a brutal early knockdown in the first round by somehow doing just enough to let referee Steve Mazagatti allow the bout to continue. The second and third rounds saw Pyle attack with various submissions off his back while a clearly tired Story tried to hold on. Pyle’s split decision victory marks his fourth straight UFC victory since losing to Rory MacDonald at UFC 133.
Bermudez Slips Past Holloway
Dennis Bermudez edged Max Holloway tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The decision was a bit of a surprise to most as it appeared that Holloway had won the first two round of the fight before Bermudez finished strong in the third. The end result was the second straight split decision for both fighters, only this time it was Holloway who came up short.
Whittaker Drops Smith
The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes champion Robert Whittaker notched his second UFC victory against The Ultimate Fighter 16 champion Colton Smith tonight in Vegas. The two fighters traded rounds leading into the third frame, with Whittaker finding his range late in the second. Whittaker turned it up in third round, dropping an advancing Smith and quickly finishing him on the canvas.
Nurmagomedov Dominates Trujillo
Dagestani fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov wanted to teach Abel Trujillo a lesson when the two faced off tonight in Las Vegas. “The Eagle” put on a clinic against the NAIA All-American with a bevy of takedowns and submission setups that constantly frustrated the Blackzilian team member. Even when Trujillo kept the fight standing, his over-aggression made it easy for the Dagestani fighter to clip him with punches before landing yet another takedown. The win improves Nurmagomedov to 20-0 in the UFC and puts himself in position for a title run.
As a side note, Nurmagomedov set a UFC record tonight wit 21 takedowns.
It’s official, Khabib landed 21 takedowns which sets a UFC record.Sherk previously had 16 in a 5 round fight and Fioravanti had 13 in 3.
