Former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, who suffered a broken hand in his unsuccessful title defense against Rashad Evans at UFC 92 in late-December, will reportedly miss the rest of 2009 as a result of the injury, The Sun reports.

Griffin had been expected to return to the octagon by May, possibly for a fight against fellow former title-holders Chuck Liddell or Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, but will be unable to return to action until fall at the earliest, according to the report.

The UFC was widely expected to book a light heavyweight championship bout between Evans and “Rampage” over a rematch between Jackson and Griffin, but the injury forces the UFC into booking the title bout, potentially as the headliner for UFC 100 in July.

that really, really sucks man i look foward to his come back! hope its soon! i really want to see him vs chuck!

  • JOHNBOY says:

must be bad for him to miss all of 2009? seems rather weired to me! guess forest will have to start back down near the bottom then when he comes back.

  • Justin says:

Yeah it’s have to be bad for Forrest to miss that long. I hope he gets better and back at it sooner than expected, I really enjoy warning him fight.

  • DigYourOwnHole says:

Injuries like this dont necessarily put him back down near the bottom… It seems to me like they usually do this..
Fight a “no name” to get your feet under you.
Fight a #8ish fight if the first went well.
    Fight a Contention fight.
Resume rankings where that puts you (possible title shot).

Its kind of like te fast track back to the top. If he loses any of those along the way though, yep, he is just back in the pack.

    HE DUCKING RAMPAGE…LOL

BUT ON A SERIOUS NOTE THAT IS A BUMMER… IM GLAD HE LOST THEN AT LEAST WE SEE A TITLE DEFENSE AND RAMPAGE HAS TO GO DEMOLISHE THE SHOW BOATER…

  • Ryan in NY says:

    Ok here’s my question.

    Griffin = out
    Rashad v Rampage
    Shogun v Coleman
    Chuck v who???? Lyoto?

Could this news be good for Chuck as it might set him up to fight a non-contender? God knows the man could use a decisive win. He’s probably due to fight again in the next couple of months too and I don’t think anyone is interested in a Chuck v Wanderlei II. Who will Chuck get?

  • Jazzkok says:

Chuck isn’t and shouldn’t be fighting a contender. This dude just ko’d twice out of his last three fights. And he isn’t going to get lyoto because thiago silva’s going to beat him. I think it should be LIDELL S HOUSTON ALEXANDER OR JAMES IRVIN.

Can’t wait to see rampage get his belt back and give rashad his first loss. It’s going to be an awesome fight.

    • Ryan in NY says:

Yeah I agree totally with the Chuck comment. As much as I love seeing the guy win and think he’s a good representation of the sport… you can’t argue with Wins and Losses.

And as much as I want to agree that Rampage will own Rashad… I have to start to question how many times I can discount Rashad, be proven wrong, and still maintain a shred of confidence in my ability to predict fights.

    • JoshV says:

That’s not true man. In Liddell’s last 3 fights, he got knoked out by Evans, decisioned Silva and lost a split decision to Jardine. You couldn’t be more wrong.

  • JoshV says:

Best of luck to Forrest. Wish for a speedy recovery.

This makes me think the winner of Machida/Silva might face Liddell. Or, possibly, this sets up A Silva vs Liddell? No?

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

anyone kno how forrest broke his hand? i dont remember him shyin away from throwin punches or favorin one hand ova the other. was it prexistin did he hurt it while flailin on the ground?

  • ufcmanz says:

I think Liddell gets the loser of Franklin Vs. Henderson fight the winner has to go back to 185 and the loser is staying at 205, I think this is the only other fighters left out there for Chuck to fight that still has a interesting ring to it ” Liddell Vs Franklin ” ” Liddell Vs Henderson “, not sure where is heard it from but I think Wanderlei Vs Alexander maybe happening.

  • Jazzkok says:

wanderlei vs alexander would be sick dude! Lidell vs Franklin or hendo makes no sense to me dude. Lidell is still a “big name” in the sport but for us “fans”(or atleast me) it doesn’t make sense for chuck to get a top guy. “big name” or not, the dude needs to work his way back up. But knowing how the ufc works, he’ll probably get a title shot next

    • JoshV says:

I agree that Liddell has to work on keeping his hands up and adjusting his style, but we all know how the UFC works:

BJ Penn – Title shot without winning (this is pure BS if you ask me)
Lesnar – Title shot with 1 victory

Liddell needs to fight one more top guy to see where he really stands, in my opinion. I still put him in my top 10, as I believe he’d be in most peoples’, but he needs to work on some tho be if he wants to keep hanging with the younger blood.

  • Ryan in NY says:

I think the issue is who do you have Chuck fight? If it’s not a top name… do you give him an up and comer? Despite his latest fights Chuck was a VERY dominant champ not too long ago. I think the Hendo v Franklin loser makes sense.

Wanderlei v Alexander sounds odd. I’m partly surprise Alexander hasn’t been cut. Oh well… if there’s a fight that’s guaranteed to end in a KO, it’d be that one.

I could speculate on fights all day.

    • JoshV says:

Most people don’t even use their heads when thinking about the LHW division. Chuck is TO-DATE the most dominant LHW of all time. He has the most title defenses. And nowadays, the LHW division is changing champs every 2 months. Sooner or later, we have to consider Anderson Silva too. I don’t like the look of that for Chuck, but he needs a W. All the BS will stop if he KO’s Silva.
