Although Daniel Cormier has announced that he’ll remain at heavyweight for his next bout, as he continues to explore the possibility of moving to 205, the rising star does not have a fight lined up. Earlier in the month, the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand-Prix winner relayed that fighting at the August 17th, UFC on FOX Sports 1 card would be “pretty cool”, and while commentating for FUEL TV this weekend, the 34 year-old took it up another notch.
While discussing when he would like to compete next, Cormier stated during the UFC on FX 8 broadcast “I want to fight on the first card on FOX Sports 1 in Boston on Aug. 17.” The heavyweight also added that he’s hoping “my man Chael Sonnen is fighting Wanderlei Silva next to me. Put us on the card, boss!”
Cormier is coming off a unanimous decision win over Frank Mir at UFC on FOX 7 on April 20th, so taking a fight in August would certainly make sense. It remains to be seen, however, who Cormier will take on next. Since Cormier is currently ranked #2 in the heavyweight division, there’s not a lot of guys out there the UFC could turn to. A fight with Roy Nelson increasingly seems like the right call no?
Oh, and as far as Sonnen and Silva? Sonnen had the following to say about the possibility of that fight materializing, since Wanderlei missed Sonnen’s well documented deadline.
“At some point my skills will diminish and my athletic abilities will go down. And when they do, I’ll either join the NFL or fight Wanderlei Silva. But at this point I’m looking ahead and I don’t know what’s next.”
