Randy Couture on Thursday underwent successful surgery to remove two “abnormally large” bone spurs from his elbow and has been forced to decline a matchup against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first-half of 2009 to allow the elbow to fully heal, SI.com’s Josh Gross reports.

Couture, who has a starring role in the upcoming Sylvester Stallone movie The Expendables, is still likely to fight Nogueira, though the bout won’t take place until July at the earliest.

Couture lost the UFC heavyweight title to Brock Lesnar in November, while Nogueiraa dropped the interim heavyweight belt to Frank Mir in late-December.

He’s learning from Fedor…. “I have an injury so I can’t fight for at least 6 months…please excuse me while I go make a movie.”

  • Gonzo says:

At this point, I don’t know if Randy can take Big Nog. Randy should step down to a lesser fighter, then go back to the top 10.

  • justin says:

I understand the guy taking some time of to get better but he should have had that surgery already, it been a month and a half since he fought Lesnar. The good news though is that at least he’ll come back and fight this year unlike Huerta.

    Kris,
You may want to take a look at “though” in the article in the middle paragraph.

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

ugh huerta… as for randy i think someone said it. “o yea i got hurt and need surgery no fightin for me but i can still act” haha watever as long as i dont hafta wait a year to see him fight again do wat must b done.

  • gunslinger says:

hopefully the old big nog shows up because if he doesnt randy will destroy him just like mir did

  • ufcmanz says:

If Couture is still interested in the Fedor fight everyone knows you have to go through Nog first

  • canadamuayguy says:

u guys know Randy by now he will not take a lesser grade fight r u drunk! lol! He only wants 2 fight the best in the biz. That really sucks cuz I was really lookin forward 2 that fight DAMN. I think Randy would have beat Nogs ASS!

  • Gonzo says:

Randy definitely needs to fight a named fighter, such as Mark Coleman, Heath Herring, or Chiek Kongo on his next bout. Then fight Big Nog. He needs to win out his UFC contract, then go to Affliction: Once And For ALL (good name for the card) and meet Fedor. Randy won’t win, but he could get his biggest payday ever($2-$3 million).

    • justin says:

Let’s see, late 2009 before his next fight, the 4+ months to the next fight, 4+ to the next fight that Means at least middle 2010 before the (I believe) three fights left on his contract are done, then another 4+ months before he’d be ready to fight again, so you’re looking at late 2010 before he could potentially fight for Affliction, if he wanted to. They haven’t shown me yet that they’ll be around then. Then, even if they are will they be able to afford $2-$3 mil? I don’t see that happening.

      • James says:

Affliction will fold by the time Randy is out of his UFC contract, so Randy will have to go to Russia or most likely Japan to fight Fedor. Fedor is scared to fight in the cage because it limits his speed and in a confined area he is not the same fighter. Remember Affliction Banned used the biggest ring ever used for a MMA event ever.

By the way, has anyone seen Tim Silvia? Took the money and ran. Maybe he could buy a backbone and a mean-streak with what Affliction paid him.

  • gunslinger says:

i still believe randy can beat fedor

    • B W says:

Imo the only way randy beats fedor is by cut. To much GNP gets him sub’d, he isn’t going to ko him. In a ring the ropes won’t favor randys clinch game. So cut it is. Randy loses this fight 4 out of 5 in a ring. In a cage randy loses 3 out of 5.

  • gunslinger says:

cage …ufc rules randy wins 4 out of 5 imo ring fedor wins 4 out of five……fedor isnt that good imo i still want to see a rematch between fedor and matt lindland….lindland rocked him and was taking him down and would have been on top for some mean GNP to a victory i think if fedor wouldnt have grabbed the ropes and used them to get on top position for the armbar

    • B W says:

What makes you think randy can win so many in the cage. The only advantage that randy gains is in his clench game and dirty boxing. But that almost always leads to the ground, where he would be sub’d. We all know the heavy hitters can ko randy. Fedor = heavy hitter. Fedor is better off his back, he is the better striker, and has better jits. They are both great at GNP but we all know fedor is the best there bar none. In the cage or in the ring, it doesn’t matter much. For anyone to say randy wins 4 outa 5 anywhere is crazy.

  • mike says:

randy and nog is a not that bad of a fight everyone says that frank mir’s striking was amazing in that fight. noooo nog just does not have any striking defense. look at nogs past couple fights his stand up was terrible. randy should knock him out within the late first round or early second. randy has more good fights in him then nog does. nog is at the true end of his career. and gonzo randy would kill herring, but get destroyed by kongo. i dont know how he would do against coleman. we will have to see how coleman does in his next fight. kongo needs to be in line for a title shot soon give him a big name and if he wins he should get the title shot he deserves. give kongo gonzaga its a great fight and could fill a card if need be.

  • Gonzo says:

Fedor will not fight in the UFC. M-1 wants to co-promote event. Dana will not let that happen. So Randy cannot fight Fedor in the UFC. Odds are, Randy will fight his UFC contract then go back to announcing and promoting with his wife.

  • James says:

Kongo vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira needs to happen. It will give fans a true read on Kongo, but better yet if Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has anything left in the tank or if the UFC should just release him now.
