Luke Rockhold is looking to make a big impression in his Octagon debut against Vitor Belfort Saturday, and after today’s presser, his motivation to beat the Brazilian star has been ratcheted up a few notches. The two middleweights engaged in a pretty heated face-off at today’s press conference in Jaragua do Sul, and Rockhold told MMA Junkie.com that he didn’t care for the way Belfort extended his fist towards him.
“Just squaring off with him and seeing eye to eye, it just really fires me up, I’m not going to lie. Him squaring up, you want to put your hand on my chin? Alright. Let’s go.”
Rockhold event went on to say that although he takes issue with Belfort’s use of testosterone-replacement-therapy, and that he’s “here to clean up the sport”, he didn’t have anything personal against the 36 year-old vet. Now, apparently, things are different.
“Standing there and squaring off with Vitor, he just lit a fire under my ass. I’m seeing red right now, and I’m in kill mode. I’m just ready to get in there and fight. That’s all I’m thinking about right now.”
The 28 year also added that he’s lost “my respect” for the accomplished vet. Now, of course, Rockhold could be just doing his part to promote the fight , but it is a huge bout for him with a lot riding on it. In other words, maybe he’s just trying to get himself more riled up for what will be the biggest fight of his life.
