Matt Hughes today revealed on his official blog that he’s likely to take on rival welterweight Matt Serra on May 23rd in Las Vegas.

“Just got a call from Joe Silva and as of right now it looks like I’ll be fighting Matt Serra in Vegas on May 23rd. This is not 100% confirmed, but I believe it is going to be on this date,” wrote Hughes.

The officially unannounced event is likely to be titled UFC 98 and could also feature a heavyweight title unification bout between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir if the promotion opts to have the blockbuster matchup headline UFC 98 rather than UFC 97 in Montreal as rumored.

Nice, should be entertaining. Nothing better than watching 2 jerks beat the snot out of each other! Hughes is still my boy though no matter how much of a d-head he is.

  • joshsmith says:

finlly man they get to fight

  • justin says:

Looking forward to this fight, I’m pulling for Hughes because I think Serra is the bigger jerk, but I’ve never met either one in person.

    • fr702 says:

Going to pick cuZ ones less of an *ass compared to eachother just for picking Hughes I’m going to pick Serra (I actually pick him against GSP, I said you can’t let Serra train 6 months for a fight the little f~er can pull it off and what he has had a year and half to train for this?)

I just really wanna see them kick the shhh outta one another.. Plus isn’t Serra a really small WW and no I don’t mean height wise

  • surfingk5 says:

hmm, let me get this one out of the way…I’m hoping Matt will win.

I’d like to see Hughes come back in honorable fashion and kick some a*** again. I always enjoy watching him fight.

  • Kyle says:

Matt Hughes has always been my number one favorite fighter and i hope he kicks serras a**. I think Hughes is in way better shape and i dont think he will get submitted by serra. At UFC 90 when he was there with Pete Sell he wieghed over 200 pounds! If this fight is pushed to the third Hughes is just gonna beat the livin snot out of him. I think he will do that anyway though. GO HUGHES!!!

    • dbiz says:

Serra may not have looked in good shape, but he’s still got 5 months and he will get there.

Plus there’s the fact that Hughes has looked bad his last few fights. He all but said he was going to hang it up over a year ago before the Serra fight got delayed. I’m not going to count on Hughes having better cardio than anyone in the UFC at this point.

Well, I might give him the edge over Gonzaga….

  • bsbiz says:

Well… This fight was relevant 18 months ago. Thanks for getting around to it, guys. Thanks a lot.

    • justin says:

Yeah, well you know there was that whole herniated disc thing, then the belt unification thing, then the knee injury thing…I guess none of that stuff matters though…

    • I agree with ya bsbiz, the welterweight division has moved on without the Matts and the delays justin mentioned made this fight even more meaningless than it was then. That said, even though neither of these guys are likely to get a title shot in 2009 (and likely ever) they have a legit grudge that keeps this fight mildly interesting. In late-2007 or early-2008 this could have headlined a PPV but now this feels like another main card fight and little more.

      • fr702 says:

Hell make it free we have waited long enough to watch matts fight one another works for me

      • Though that’s a possibility I can’t see the UFC wasting this fight on a non-PPV card unless they were desperate for a big fight night. Despite the lack of ramifications this fight is still likely to draw some buys, though its success will largely be affected by the heat they can generate over the next few months leading up to the event.

  • miggy24 says:

Lets go Serra retire Hughes once and for all!!!

  • huertarogerhuerta says:

for making us wait a year and a half for this crap they should put it on a fight night

  • Johnny D says:

ummmmm hughes will kick his ass…. bottom line!

  • nelson sanchez... says:

I remember watching matt hughes slamming carlos newton unconscious. serra has never really impressed me in any of his wins. hughes is a legend in the sport and needs to quite down serra then walk away from the sport happy that he beat the sh** of his little loud mouth. serra most overrated Lw and Ww ever.

  • Us And Chuck says:

Absolutely agree on how irrelevant this fight is although we can not blame either fighter as such but the relevance of the fight has long gone.

While most people are predicting a Hughes white wash i’ve got money on my boy Serra winning via those those heavy heavy hands

  • gunslinger says:

imo serra should drop down to lw i think he could be very good at that weight and hughes just needs to go back to MFS or go to a new school like couture or jacksons because the H.I.T. squad is just hirrible robbie lawler is the only fighter who is still succesful on that team hughes hasnt won a fight since leaving MFS i believe

    • aznstar_inc says:

gunslinger your right, since leaving MFS he hasent won anything. he doesnt train as hard in his gym and has looked horrible in every fight since moving on. I would love nothing more than to see Serra get Hughes in an arm bar round 2 and see that look on Hughes face again, the same one he had when GSP almost broke it off.

      • Justin says:

I doubt Hughes will go back to MFS. In fact I don’t even know that he will fight anymore after this fight. I read his blog regularly and he has a lot of stuff going on and a lot of different ways he makes money. He doesn’t need to fight anymore to provide for his family. In addition he is the type of person that doesn’t see any point in trying to compete if he doesn’t think he can win or be the best, and I think he is very near that point regardless of the outcome of the Serta fight.

  • hockeysucks says:

I can’t wait for Hughes to anhiliate this punk. This jabroni! Shoulda never been in contention in the first place. He set the division back 1 year with his injury. And then, he just magically recovers as soon as Hughes lost to gsp. Come on Hughes, humble this loser like gsp did.

  • canadamuayguy says:

Waiting so long 4 this 1 do we even wanna c it now? And who ever said serra is a bigger prick your wrong sorry. My buddy met Serra & said he so nice & he is very funny. Now u wont like this but my cuz trains MUAY THAI & runs his own karate dojo & is 6th degree b belt & his son was 11yrs old at the time. “Kids gonna b a champ” training since he was 5yrs old. They went Hughes seminar & my 11yr old cuz was next 4 a pic he shoved my little kid cuz aside 2 take pics with 1 of his fellow fighters the guy is a Ahole man taking pics with buds & pushin kids away thats real good 2 look up 2 eh. I never liked him any way the only reason he held the title so long cuz E-body back then was 1sided all he had was superior wrestling his striking is the worst I have ever seen. Sorry guys had 2 tell ya that1

    • Justin says:

All that being said Hughes also spends a lot of time and money helping out an orphanage in Mexico, which he has been doing since before becoming a fighter I believe. So he’s got his redeeming actions as well.

      • willy d says:

That is a redeeming quality, but IMO, would be a helluva lot more meaningful if he was spending time and money for an orphanage in Illinois. The U.S. has a very high rate of foster children and many kids in need of clothes, food, shelter, etc. Always baffles me when our government, celebrities, athletes, etc reach out to other countries when we are hurting just as much right here at home. As far as the fight goes, I really don’t care who wins, but will go for Hughes if this is indeed his last MMA fight.

      • Justin says:

Yeah not sure exactly why it’s one in Mexico, I believe his brother put him on to it. I agree that people should invest their time and money here for these causes, but sometimes these places are government run and therefore limit outside assistance. Not sure though.

  • Aaron says:

This fight lost most of it’s spice. UFC took to long to match these guys up. They could have bank rolled a year ago on this fight.

  • luke says:

    who cares?
They should both drop to Lightweight. These two can’t beat most welterweights.

  • Vinz C1ortho says:

With a body type like Serra’s it is unlikely you will ever see him looking up to par with some other fighters.. but that dosn’t mean he isn’t in great shape and able to go three rounds.

  • me says:

Good luck Matt hughes home town girl wishes you the best. We know you can do it. keep your head up go out like you came in. Spend time with your family enjoy life.
