Aside from UFC on FX 8 headliner Luke Rockhold, this Saturday’s card will also feature the UFC debut of another Strikefore star in Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who is the promotion’s former champ and a god to most jiu-jitsu enthusiasts. Accordingly, the UFC handed “Jacare” the number eight spot in the promotion’s middleweight rankings, despite the fact he’s never battled in the Octagon.
The man who will face “Jacare” is Chris Camozzi, who has kind of quietly (but still violently) put together a four fight win streak heading into the May 18th card. Since losing by unanimous decision to Francis Carmont in October, 2011, Camozzi has scored consecutive wins over Dustin Jacoby, Nick Catone, Luiz Cane and most recently Nick Ring. The Colorado fighter has already made it known that he thinks a win over Souza this Saturday should propel him into the coveted top ten rankings. Beating “Jacare” would certainly be a great way of going about it.
Despite Camozzi’s (19-5) recent run, however, he’s keenly aware of the fact that “Jacare” is the favorite heading into UFC on FX8, and that the Brazilian is arriving in the UFC with plenty of expectations on his shoulders. While speaking to MMA Weekly.com, Camozzi noted:
“He’s ranked higher than me. This is a fight where not that many people are giving me a chance of winning. So I go in there and fight with nothing to lose and those are the most dangerous fights for guys like Jacare to take.”
The Brazilian fighter will also face Camozzi in front of a partisan Jaragua do Sul crowd, but whether that helps him or hinders Souza remains to be seen. It should be an entertaining fight with lots on the line for both men, but there’s no doubt that Camozzi has more to gain and less to lose than “Jacare.”
