Chael Sonnen has become one of the sport’s biggest names, not only because of his athletic abilities, but because of his talents on the mic. Of course, due to this unprecedented gift for promoting fights and trash talk, it’s no secret that Sonnen is one of the more polarizing fighters in MMA.
According to recent TUF 17 competitor Jimmy Quinlan, however, he was extremely impressed with Sonnen as a coach, as well as a person during his recent run on the show. In an interview with Mixed Martial Arts.com’s Jack Brown, the accomplished grappler noted about the former middleweight:
“The experience on TUF was an awesome one. Being on Chael’s team, and interacting with him and his coaches, was truly an honor. Chael is such a high quality human being and really put a lot of effort into making sure everyone, whether you were on Team Sonnen or Team Jones, got the most out of the experience,” said Quinlan. “There weren’t many other big things that happened on the show that were not shown really. There were a ton of little stories about guys hanging out and having fun, but the producers did a great job of capturing the most important storylines of the season.”
Of course, other people have said similar things about Sonnen, who has certainly enraged his fair share of fans (just ask the Nogueira brothers) over the years by making “colorful” statements. Thus, plenty of folks were surprised when “The American Gangster” largely stayed away from the smack talk heading into his recent bout with Jon Jones. Don’t expect Sonnen to be so reserved in the coming months if his proposed fight with Wanderlei Silva gets signed for August.
That fight’s got to happen.
