With Costa Philippou no longer able to fight “Jacare” Souza at UFC on FX 8, due to a cut he reportedly incurred over his eye, the UFC has moved Chris Camozzi into a bout with the former Strikefore champ.
Camozzi was originally scheduled to fight Rafael Natal, however, as a result of the switch, the latter will now take on newcomer Joao Zeferino.
While Philippou versus Jacare had all the makings on an entertaining and compelling bout, Camozzi (19-5) is also an aggressive fighter who has won four straight fights and is rising up the middleweight ladder. Most recently, the Colorado fighter scored a split decision win over Nick Ring in March.
Souza (17-3) is one of the top Strikeforce vets who has not made his Octagon debut yet. The only men to defeat the jiu-jitsu star in his last ten fights are Gegard Mousasi and Luke Rockhold; no tomato cans there. Most recently, the Brazilian tapped out UFC vet Ed Herman at the final Strikeforce event in January.
Zeferino (13-4) makes his way into the UFC, on short notice, having won seven straight fights. Natal (15-4-1) is 3-1-1 in his last five outings and is coming off a submission win over Sean Spencer in January.
UFC on FX 8 goes May 18th in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil and will see the aforementioned Rockhold battle Vitor Belfort in the main event.
