Aside from the “close your eyes kids” toe injury that Jon Jones incurred in the UFC 159 headliner, an even scarier moment occurred at the event when Alan Belcher was cut in his right eye, which the middleweight has injured severely in the past.
According to a tweet the middleweight posted, Belcher needed eight stitches to close a cut on his eyelid, which occurred late in the round after Michael Bisping accidently poked him in the eye. MMA Junkie.com is reporting that the cut did not affect Belcher’s retina, thankfully, which has been detached before and required two surgeries. Immediately following the surgeries it wasn’t clear if Belcher would fight again.
Belcher’s tweet stated: “I ‘m ok.. Just got back from e.r. 8 stitches in eyelid. Disappointed. To my real supporters, I’m sorry, thank you once again.”
So, if you’re a Belcher fan, or perhaps admire Johnny Cash tattoos, then the bad news is that the middleweight lost by technical unanimous decision to Bisping. The good news is that it appears Belcher will be fine.
The loss was Belcher’s second in a row, as the bruising striker dropped a unanimous decision to Yushin Okami in December, after winning four straight fights. If you caught Belcher’s wins over Jason MacDonald, Rousimar Palhares or Patrick Cote, then you know he’ll be back.
