If you’re not a fan of fighters getting immediate title shots when they go up or down a division, then you’re not going to like what Dana White might have in store for heavyweight Daniel Cormier, if he drops to 205. You’re also probably unhappy about tomorrow’s UFC 159 headliner between former middleweight Chael Sonnen and light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, but are still going to watch it.
Now that Cormier has made a successful Octagon debut, by cruising his way to a unanimous decision win over Frank Mir last Saturday, it remains to be seen what the rising fighter’s future holds. Cormier has made it no secret that he doesn’t want to fight training partner and friend, heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez, and is seriously exploring the possibility of moving to light-heavyweight.
Cormier recently revealed on UFC Tonight that he plans on making a decision soon, so not surprisingly, UFC President Dana White was asked for his thoughts on the decorated wrestler’s future this week.
According to MMA Weekly.com, White stated : “I actually prefer him at 205. He could drop to 205 and get a shot at the title in my opinion… day one. Look at the guys he’s beat at heavyweight.”
Now, Cormier did call out Jones this past January after he defeated Josh Barnett, but he also relayed on UFC Tonight that he would like to fight at 205 pounds at least once, before taking a title shot. Regardless of whether he fights for the belt right away, it’s looking more and more like Cormier should make the move.
