Although Roy Nelson is just two wins removed from his unanimous decision loss to Fabricio Werdum, the charismatic heavyweight believes a big win over Cheick Kongo at UFC 159 could lead to a title shot.
Of course, part of the reason Nelson likely feels this way, is because he’s coming off memorable stoppage wins over Dave Herman and Matt Mitrione. In addition, Nelson knows the influence fans can have over matchmaking–Saturday’s headliner between Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones is proof of that–and he believes the chips may fall in his favor.
Speaking at the UFC 159 presser today, Nelson stated the following about his title shot chances (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“It really comes down to the fans. It is about that timing,” Nelson said. “After UFC 160, it’s only a month difference (from now). So the timing after this, if I win, I definitely could get the next title shot.”
Heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez is set to fight Antonio Silva at UFC 160, and that card will also feature Junior dos Santos versus Mark Hunt. While Nelson may be hoping to lock up a title shot, both dos Santos and Hunt, and their fans, will likely be calling for a crack at the belt if they win on May 25th.
Then, of course, there’s also Mr. Kongo, who certainly doesn’t plan on helping Nelson move up the heavyweight rankings Saturday night.
