MMAFrenzy’s coverage of The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale continues with our recaps of tonight’s FX openers. In the second fight of the night, Travis Browne defeated Gabriel Gonzaga in a quick heavyweight fight. In tonight’s first bout, Robert “Bubba” McDaniel defeated Gilbert Smith in a TUF 17 grudge match.
Browne Destroys Gonzaga
Travis Browne made a successful return from a torn hamstring with an unconventional knockout of Gabriel Gonzaga. Browne would start teeing off on Gonzaga with brutal elbows that sent the Brazilian in a heap on the canvas. Browne pushes his UFC record to 5-1-1 with the victory.
While there was some question about the legality of Browne’s elbows, it is unlikely to be heard on appeal due to recent rule change and because the only flagrant elbow landed as Gonzaga was falling, which absolves Browne from penalty.
“Bubba” McDaniel Dominates Smith
It was no secret that Team Jones teammates Robert “Bubba” McDaniel and Gilbert Smith never liked each other, so Smith made sure to call UFC matchmaker Joe Silva and asked for McDaniel. Smith bit off a bit more than he could chew however, and struggled in a three round fight with McDaniel. Bubba just looked better, and more experienced, over the three round fight.
McDaniel would eventually secure a victory in his UFC debut with a perfectly timed triangle attack that eventually became a triangle armbar, with forced Smith to relent in the third round.
