UFC Announces UFC Fight Night 17 Main Card; Miller Replaces Sakara on Preliminary Card
The UFC this week confirmed the official lineup for UFC Fight Night 17, which takes place on February 7th at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida and airs live on Spike TV
Confirmed for the main card were Hermes Franca vs. Joe Lauzon, Denis Stojnic vs. Cain Velasquez, Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer, and Nick Catone vs. Amir Sadollah.
The promotion also officially announced Rob Emerson vs. Kurt Pellegrino, Matt Grice vs. George Sotiropoulos, Rich Clementi vs. Gleison Tibau, and Luigi Fioravanti vs. Anthony Johnson for the unaired preliminary card.
A bout featuring Alessio Sakara against Jake Rosholt will not take place as scheduled as Sakara has been forced to withdraw from the bout for undisclosed reasons. 2-0 UFC veteran Dan Miller has agreed to fill in on short notice for Sakara and face Rosholt on the undercard. Additionally, a rumored bout between Steve Bruno and Matt Riddle has not yet been officially confirmed by the promotion.

This is a stacked card, and I personally would like to Rosholt vs. Miller and AJ vs. Fioravanti in addition to the four fights scheduled to air. They should make this a three hour show (on TV) instead of just two.
I agree that AJ should be on the tv card, I would really like for this to a 3hr show too.
Here’s a question for those more observant than me….
It seems the UFC has a 3 loss and gone “policy” (for lack of a better word) in place for their non-star fighters. Should someone taking a fight on 2-3 weeks notice not have that fight count towards that policy?
The most recent loss I can think of that is somewhat along those lines was Kos-Alves where Kos stepped in on 2 weeks notice (I think) and lost. I know he isn’t liked in these parts, but stepping up and taking that fight and showing the way he did really shouldn’t have hurt his climb towards a possible title shot, should it?
Yeah you seem to be right with the 3 Loss and Gone policy but I don’t think too many of those types of policies are set in stone. It seems to me that the UFC leaves the thought behind those decisions vague on purpose to protect fighters that might lose but still draw tickets (Chuck, Wanderei, Hughes).
My $.02
I would think that a loss in that situation shouldn’t count towards the three loss policy, and I think that it usually doesn’t. In terms of Kos’ loss to Alves hurting is climb on the title shot rankings: I think that it should affect the title shot climb in that maybe he needs to pick up an extra win somewhere, but I don’t think it puts him back at the bottom of the ladder, so to speak.
The 3 loss and gone “policy” is a bit fuzzy, like Ryan said. It depends on who it is. If its a relative newcomer, then yeah, they’re gone, if its a TUF winner or long time UFC fighter, or a big name fighter, they’re less likely to get booted. Case in point, Wandi is 1-4 in his last five fights, 1-2 in the UFC, but I highly doubt if he would get cut if he lost his next fight, unless that fight was against a can.
“Of course, this is all really off topic…” – Captain Obvious
WHAT THE &#%$ RUMBLE ON THE UNDERCARD!That better change! Good lookin card though.
has houston alexander been cut?
No he signed like a 5 or 6 fight deal right before his last loss I believe…
Houston i do believe is actually training so he doesnt get cut and i would assume that he would take a “small show” fight to get rid of the ring rust… He is exciting imo, and as a person from what I know of him, hell of a guy (no i dont know him personally), I really want him to go to a top name camp and get serious, I like him and hope he comes back strong
*side note*
Jesse “COCO the peeing MONKEY” Taylor is on the Indian Res. circut here in California, he has a fight @ Eagle Mountain Casino on the 15th, ” UFC star” Jesse Taylor mind you…. ya you know your pumped and tickets 15 bucks ya
15 bucks, eh? I wish we had fights here for $15.
Ya but they won’t say who else is fighting nor who Coco is fighting either..
Yeah, that sucks.
Yeah, Houston signed a long-term deal (like 5-6 fights as mentioned). Not that the length really matters since the UFC can cut you whenever they want but still.
Maybe I can put together some $15 fight cards once I’m in NC!
Also, I wish we had fights here in PA no matter the cost, though I did get to witness a hell of a brawl on new year’s eve and nearly choked a guy out (RNC fully applied but he gave up before going out), but that’s for another time
.
You are a beast, Kris.
Kris,
Sounds like you didn’t “witness” the brawl, but instead were involved. I hope this wasn’t at a family get together
I suppose you’re right, though I wasn’t involved in the initial fight but the aftermath/breakup. Good times (and no, it wasn’t w/ family haha)…
I don’t think the ufc would cut anybody who brings in viewers…example: wandi…hes an exciting fighter and even though hes losing fights, he still brings in a crowd of people…its all about the benjamins!!!
dude EMERSON VS PELEGRINO should be in the main card that’s going to be a great fight. So should clementi vs tibau
i wish i could see this whole card from top to bottom looks great!
Another card without a light-heavy match-up being televised? We constantly hear about the depth in the division, but they refuse to give us free fights showing 205. Anderson Silva for one fight doesn’t count. Come on Dana, show some depth at the 205 division. Afterall, you are hitting me up 3 times in 45 days for $45.00 a pop to watch the big boys go at it.
