He took those painkillers because he broke his foot and didn't want to pull out of the fight. He wanted to keep training and fight A. Silva, because it was a huge opportunity that could have changed his career much for the better...instead, it turned out about as bad as it possibly could have, KO'd in 39 seconds & suspended for 9 mos.
