James Irvin will be eligible to return to action on April 19th after serving a 9-month suspension for testing positive for the banned painkillers methadone and oxymorphone following his first-round TKO loss to Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19th.

Irvin discussed the suspension, his return, and plans to drop to middleweight in a recent interview with Warrior Fight Store.

“My suspension’s up April 19th so I’ll fight on the first card after April… I’d love to fight Wanderlei [Silva]. There’s a few guys actually, but I’m gonna try to get to ‘85. I plan on fighting at 185 in April. There are a bunch of guys down there that I really want to beat up,” said Irvin.

“The Sandman” is 14-5 in his career, including a 4-4 mark in the UFC. Since returning to the promotion in late-2006 Irvin has scored victories over Hecotr Ramirez, Luis Arthur Cane, and Houston Alexander while dropping bouts to Thiago Silva and Silva.

I was so upset he threw that lazy kick, i wanted to truly see how Silva would stand up to the power of Irvins punches but i guess Anderson didnt care to find out. Painkillers are a ****, i had a surgery to break and straighten my spine and i have 24 screws and Titanium rods up my entire spine. I weeded those pills out quick because they are so addictive but why Methadone, thats usually used to help quit Heroin and other hard drugs?

    • justin says:

Methadone is a synthetic opiate, it still has similar affects, but less addictive (I believe). That’s why it is used to help quit heroin and other opiates, and also, therefore, why it can be used as a painkiller.

  • Ryan in NY says:

Is it me or is James Irvin the type of guy that thinks he can fight anyone but hasn’t proved ANYTHING. He says he’d like to fight Wanderlei??? That’s like me calling out Chuck Liddell.

  • Jazzkok says:

Irving has potential to be an exiting fighter to watch. I’d love to see him vs wanderlei, but if he drops to 185, i wanna see him vs cote, bisping, leben or nate quarry.

  • teambag says:

how can he possibly drop down to 185 he is one of the biggest 205ers ive ever seen

  • canadamuayguy says:

Ryan in NY,Thats not the same as u callin out iceman!Irvin is a pro UFC fighter r u?Irvin would give Iceman a run would u? in turn he can back up when he calls out! lol.

    • Josh V says:

Yeah, no, you’re right. He CLEARLY backed up all his talk about Silva. What a joke.

      • canadamuayguy says:

CLEARLY i meant he has the right 2 call on fighters he is pro i dont even like irvin.A.silva 1 of my top3 fav! CLEARLY id like 2 c u fight iceman like u said it b over faster than A.silva vs. Irvin use your head when u comment. If u r a pro fighter sorry 4 commenting.

  • jigga says:

I dont think WAND is coming down to 185 anytime soon. He doesnt look like he has 20lbs to loose. He should stay at 205 if he wants to fight WANDERLEI.

  • AtticussAtticuss says:

If I was Irving, I think I would stay away from any fighter with the last name of Silva…

  • gunslinger says:

james irvin would destroy liddell or wandi and im really confident in that…he should have beat anderson he had a real shot he just threw a stupid leg kick….he is exciting and is in the next ufc game…as long as he is putting out fast KO’s and highlite reels dana will keep him around……P.S.- “Methadone’s a hell of a drug!” …lol i had to pull a rick james!

  • fr702 says:

Irvin is a tough fighter and is explosive (ask Alexander and Martin) I really don’t know if he can make the weight cut, he is a pretty muscularly big dude..

I would have to disagree about him being able to take Wanderlei, but he has the power, but to stand and bang usually isn’t the best way to beat Wand especially with his tendoncy to lead with a soft leg kick (ask Jardine about that)

    • canadamuayguy says:

Fr that guy that said its the same as him callin on iceman as irvin callin out fighters. That is a #%$%in huge diff irvin is pro! He %$##in better b if he wants iceman.I wonder if that guy has trained once.LMFAO!

  • gunslinger says:

i like james irvin hes a cool guy……..plenty of fighters go through a time like this…and hey maybe irvin will come back from this drug problem even better than before!

    • COLE says:

Irvin doesn’t have a drug problem! He took those painkillers because he broke his foot and didn’t want to pull out of the fight. He wanted to keep training and fight A. Silva, because it was a huge opportunity that could have changed his career much for the better…instead, it turned out about as bad as it possibly could have, KO’d in 39 seconds & suspended for 9 mos. Drug problem? NO! Poor decision making…absolutely!

      • justin says:

I definitely think it was poor decision making. If his foot hurt so bad he should have gotten a prescription for the pain meds, but instead he got them from the street pharmacist.

  • Vinz C1ortho says:

Methodone can be used to get off oxy’s, which shows he probably has been trying to get off them but has not been yet successful.

  • inkavader says:

methadone is extremely addictive and they are starting to give it instead of oxy to patients its a better painkiller then oxy but a lot harder to detox off of oxy can take anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks for symtoms to go away methadone take a month to 6 months its actually worse than herion I KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE and WANDERLEI would kick irvins ass bad i would love to see that fight make it happen dana

  • Phovos says:

No…..regardless of any day, anywhere, with both arms tied…..Silva beats Irvin. I used to dig that guy. Then he showed me that he’s average. ugh…..

  • shane says:

give the guy a break lok at his loses? whats so bad about that thers a lot of guys with that?

  • gunslinger says:

to far there phovos irvin would destroy silva if both his arms were tied behind his back, he wouldnt even be able to get the momentum to kick hard enough with out his arms and he would lose his balance….irvin by flying knee round 1 minute 1 0:09 seconds lol
