UFC officials have confirmed UFC 70 will air for free on Spike but it will be shown on a tape delay, not at 2 p.m. when the event will be happening during prime-time in England. This presents a predicament in an age of lightning quick information sharing as the results will be posted and fully circulate online before the event ever airs in the U.S.
NBCSports.com has the scoop on the tape-delay:
“NBCSports.com has confirmed through a source close to the organization that UFC 70 will be broadcast on SpikeTV. The event will be shown on tape-delay on April 21 beginning at 9 pm ET. An official statement should come Tuesday.
The UFC had originally hoped that their long talked-about deal with HBO would be completed in time to broadcast UFC 70 on the premium-cable channel, but the negotiations hit a snag, and while they are still ongoing, an agreement wasn’t expected in time to put the production together. Because UFC and Spike have such a strong working relationship, it became a natural pairing for the event.”
The news is not surprising given that the UFC will likely get drastically more viewers by showing the event in prime time which will maximize UFC’s revenue by increasing advertising. It will be interesting to see how this experiment goes for the UFC and if all goes well we can hope UFC decides to make this a more regular occurrence.
